It seems that is what Mathieulh is saying.
Basically, if your GW launcher happens to become corrupted, then the launcher has a check which prevents it from running, thus preventing the Brick code from running as well.

So all those saying they got a brick from using an unmodified GW launcher are lying.
As even a tiny bit of corruption would prevent the launcher from even running thanks to the Sanity check.

Im assuming that the R4i team most likely removed this check to allow their launcher to work, but they failed to remove the brick code.

Don't assume anything. Always be a skeptic about it all. But also don't say everyone is lying. It's like saying all liars are lawyers. There may be a chance that something went wrong. I've had situations where a program ran and got corrupted while running, but when I ran it again nothing happened. If the contacts aren't exactly the same with a retail cart, then something could have disconnected during execution, after the sanity check, and caused the bricking.

I don't own a Gateway, as my 3DS firmware is the latest version, but I know that it's a common problem with flash carts, having trouble connecting to the contacts in the handheld, and sometimes if bumped hard enough can cause the contacts to disconnect. I have first hand experience with a Supercard DS2, and those things are a little thick.

Needless to say, I doubt Gateway would intentionally have a suicide code in their loaders, but I wouldn't put it past companies who would try to squash competition based on their hard work, and not think the ramifications through, or possible collateral damage. Again, I don't think Gateway would do it on purpose, but I'm not going to close my mind off to the possibilities. I want to see this thing through and have definitive confirmation with evidence that can be reproduced easily.

Edit: json: They said something about it bricking after a certain amount of time. So I don't know if it means much later if it still doesn't match or something else. But still your test is a good way to check, unless others end up with bricked systems too as a result. Would be a terrible situation, but unless you were lying, it sounds like the problem with the bricking is somewhere else. Good job.

There is always a chance of getting a brick from some whatever unexpected behavior but if you do, it'll be likely from an unrelated issue.

So if you are a GW user, and are in fact running an unmodified launcher, then you have nothing to worry about. (in regards to this brick code)
Perhaps your post should be added to the new article posted on the Main Page, so GW users could rest assure that they generally have nothing to worry about. (corruption or no corruption)

You can test it yourself. Take the official 2.0b2 launcher.dat file, and modify 1 byte. The 3DS will hang, and when you reboot all is fine. The ARM9 payload is blocked off from executing so no chance for brick.

I have tried and modify random different bytes and rebooted 30 times.

Result: My 3DS is not bricked :yaysp:

Normmatt's patches are specially crafted, because it neutralize the sanity check, and so it will get to run ARM9 payload which (supposedly) bricks (not confirmed myself).
Umm.. why?
That must be done on purpose.
(Skipped check on purpose, I am no saying brick on purpose)

They were careful enough not to break with an original Launcher. It doesn't seem all that unlikely.

That's actually the answer I want to hear. I didn't buy a gateway just for the hell of it, I also knew the risks. (It's why I even own a 2nd 3DS, )
I'm just hoping that the chances of bricks are not caused by them, but rather me.
Ryukouki, would it be possible to contact those that can also prove what mathieulh is saying, because I feel that the info is flying out of nowhere.

I believe that the launchers offered by gateway (unmodified ofc), shouldn't cause the bricks as it would be quite illogical to plant a kill code to kill gateway users.

They've been hard to reach as well, even for me, not answering messages related to that query. I'll try again though. -_-

What if the code in memory (as opposed to the launcher on the SD card) got corrupted somehow? What's the chance of that?

If thier attitude maintains and they dont remove such code , i can see it haveing completely the opposite effect upon what they intended.... patched firmware on clone cards being the preference to this bullshit.

There been some false reports recently of bricking and other problems with Nintendo 3DS consoles, and the Gateway 3DS team has issued a WARNING that these reports are due to 'clones' and 'unofficial' mods and updates to their official Launcher.dat and any reports you have been seeing on forums that Gateway 3DS is causing the issue is NOT true, and it is only because people are using 'clones' or the 'unofficial updates' on their device, please stay away from these patches and clones and you will be fine and stay tuned for our full final v2.0 coming soon.

from what i have read this is how rumors work on gbatemp
ABOSOLUTE FACT----->PRETTY MUCH TRUE (except that little bit we said was part of the fact...thats not but everything else is tru)--------->WELL THIS PART IS ATLEAST TRUE......DEFINATLY....-----------------> ok well its possible its not true.....but it probably is------------------->oh it turns out it was false

give it a few days to work its way backwards from the usual order

Yeah. But there's still the chances of runtime issues that could happen randomly or even simply by accidentally tapping the handheld against an object. That could cause the contacts to disconnect, and for things that could read/write to the system NAND, that could be fatal. Kind of like dropping your laptop on accident while it's on and the hard drive is spinning. The hard drive will get damaged enough that practically everything you have on it gets destroyed and you have to get a new drive and install a new system.
