Gaming Multiplayer not working

So I'm having troubles getting multiplayer to work between my DSi and DS Lite. I've tried it with 2 physical games and via sd download play. Have also tried to initiate the game from both consoles.

Step A, Boot a game, select multiplayer, select host a game.
Step B, Boot the other DS in Dowload Play and join, or
Step C, Boot other game, select multiplayer, select join a game.

If that doesn't work, then one of your ds units may have a defect. Can they both connect online?

My DSi will but not for games. The whole WEP/WPA2 thing. I just picked up the DS Lite and haven't been able to get online with it at all. Figured it wasn't possible because of my network security. I have had the game I created come up on the other unit but it wouldn't connect. Also the steps you listed are the way I was trying. Seems like there's no info on a problem like this on the net from what I've seen.
