Hacking WTF?????? NAND Updating Gone Wrong!

Hmm. I just put the SD card in my computer, and it's labeled GATEWAYNAND, with only a Launcher.dat and the Nintendo 3DS folder.

No actual NAND.bin file. What does this mean? Even if I take the SD out and start the system with no SD inserted, it says 6.3.0-12U.

With the SD This means its created the hidden partition holding the EmuNAND and card is prepared, SD should be smaller than original size, but if you start system and arent going into GW mode and seeing 6.3 it means you updated the system NAND, booting with the SD card does nothing by itself, you still have to enter GW mode while its in to load the EmuNAND if it finds it, seems people are Backing up and preparing EmuNAND and then not actually loading exploit to boot to the EmuNAND

OP are you 100% sure you never left the system settings before doing upgrade, its alot safer to leave internet connection or had them set up prior, i didnt even turn slider off, if you ever leave system settings in EmuNAND it will fall back to the SystemNAND, safest bet is have internet setup so when you enter settings and see the GW3D, so straight to page system update and do it, i didnt need the internet for 1 3DS as update was on the NAND, but both i did updated fine to GW3D 6.3.x

i dont understand how people are doing this as even if you leave settings and drop back to the original, next time you enter setting you will see no GW3D, so you know its not in EmuNAND, basically the rule of thumb is if you are ever in the settings in EmuNAND, to continue in emuNAND besides in the settings, you need to exit settings, reenter settings and reenter GW mode via ds profile

Well, this may work only if you are planning to update using a the update partition of a retail game.

Aside for updates, there's no point on getting the distinction on the main menu.
The Gateway team specifically states that you should only update via the System Settings menu, not using games.

The reason for this may be that there's no indicator for the main menu, while there's the GW3DS lettering on the system menu. If the actual problem for this is a bug, they didn't make it clear.

If this is the case, there isn't a benefit of making a distinction between the emulated NAND and the real NAND on the main menu, since the changes occur while entering and exiting System Settings.

Why would you update via a game anyway, when it wouldnt take you to the newest version, however updating via games is prob fine if you know what you are doing, i used a rom to go from 4.1 to 4.5 and would like to try a EmuNAND classic mode update when a retail with 6.3 comes out

Upon booting a game binary, the underlying OS may go nuts and the redirect trick might not work as intended - we don't know what happens in the background, the Gateway team does. Speculation aside, this is a part of the official manual. Disregard the direct intructions and experiment at your own peril. ;)

I didn't say I was going to update via retail cartridge (or does my comments seem to suggest otherwise?), just pointing out that making a distinction using the main menu is pointless.

I realize it's a beta, but good lord! Has anyone else run into this? So... now what? I do have a NAND.bin file... but I can't solder so I'm guessing I won't be able to restore the thing myself. Is there anyone here in America that would be willing to flash my NAND back for me?
Perhaps offer a small amount of $ on the tradeing forum, there are a few people here on the temp who flash 3ds firmwares. Maybe you can get their attention that way.

Did you left the system settings and reentered it before the update? If you leave the system settings while in GW-Mode you're back on SysNAND rather than on emuNAND.

I hope your 3DS is an XL model, otherwise you are going to have a bad time.

It is. I hate the non-XLs.

So what part of the country do you live in???
Florida, for now. Moving back to Michigan in a few weeks.

First off.....the don't document this well enough....but you have to take the SD card out of your system after doing the Nand backup and transfer the file to your PC.......then you put card back in and move to the next step.............when you create the emunand partition is erases the SD card and wipes the nand backup file. I actually did the backup twice and then compared MD5 hash to make sure the file was the same....I am afraid if you didn't get that 1GB nand file backed up before you made the EmuNand you may be in real trouble with doing a restore....DO NOT ERASE your EmuNand SD card if this is the case...maybe there will be a way to raw image it with win32 and send it to Gateway and they can extract your 4.5 Nand from the EmuNand card?
OK, I'm pretty sure I pointed out exactly what I did. But I'll be more specific.
Since it was a new Gateway firmware, I first formatted my 3DS's memory from system settings. Set it up with a username, date/time, region. Declined to accept the network settings so it wouldn't accidentally ask me to update. Used the blue GW card to load the DS mode exploit, then turned my system off. Without any game cards inserted, held L while pressing DS profile, and selected Backup NAND. Once that was complete, I turned my 3DS XL off, put the SD in my computer, and copied NAND.bin to my hard drive. Put the SD back in the 3DS, and hit "format emuNAND" in the Gateway launcher.
Then I put my Gateway in the 3DS, and did a hardware diagnostic test. All passed OK. Then I booted in Gateway Mode (not Classic mode), and it showed my Kid Icarus Uprising cart through the Gateway. Entered system settings, and it clearly said GW3D 4.5.0-10U. So I went into Internet settings, added my router, and did a connection test. It made me accept the network agreement, which I did. I then headed over to Other settings, and did a system update. Never left system settings after starting it the first time.
And here we are.
i think what most people dont realize
once you enter the settings in a RedNAND (Redirected), leaving the settings and then going back will often then boot the console back into PhyNAND (Phyical NAND)
so make a cahnge to you PhyNAND home Menu, be it changing Icon Size, move stuff around
the RedNAND will then be noticable when you are in it
See what I said above. Does that help? :P

Haha, but from his post I'd gather that he's in Europe.

I'm sure we have some Americans with the ability to do it as well.

Same here. I don't know why everyone keeps saying this. Read what I wrote carefully. I didn't even accept the network agreement on the real NAND. I only added an Internet connection after seeing it was in EmuNAND mode

After setting up your internet connection it goes back to real NAND and you're supposed to re-boot into EmuNAND before updating, this is why it specifies on the guide to make sure you're in EmuNAND AFTER setting up your internet connection.

Don't fret. Pretty damn easy to downgrade an XL if you have the dump. Find someone who can solder and can spare ten minutes. It's really quite am easy solder job.

I think that the problem could be here, cause you changed settings that connects directly to you profile (Country). I have done same as you, but i had the agreement done before, with no need to add internet connection.

Yep, it says that.

Once you have entered into the System Settings application and clearly seeing the "GW3D" version number, enter into WiFi settings and set up a connection.

3) Update your emuNAND partition. Boot into Gateway mode, and enter into the System Settings application.

I did it like this on mine (Accepted connexion terms, added connexion, updated without reboot) and the real nand is still 4.5.0-10E (The emunand is GW3D 6.3.0-12E)
So adding the connexion parameters should'nt have restarted the 3DS to real nand :x

me too, I had to set up the internet stuff and was still on emunand and everything works like a charm.

what are these new names you speak of... what happened to emuNAND and ermm... NAND ??
