Hacking What exactly is limiting the software between carts?

What makes the Gateway cart any different then the R4i gold deluxe in terms of what software you can install on it?

It seems to be clear that you cant simply buy a R4i and just toss gateway on it, else everyone would buy the cheaper r4i, but why is it you cant do this? For that matter, all the clones that came out/will come out?

I'm considering picking up a gateway atm, but I've been wondering what the physical difference is between the two. I'm afraid I'll pickup the gateway and in a few months the hardware you use wont matter as someone will have a device that can run anyone's software (hopefully not cuz then devs wont work on it anymore...)
I joined the ps3 jailbreaking club when it first started and I remember almost getting screwed on buying a ps3key type device, then weeks later you could do it with anything, a calculator or a cheap 20$ board. The software to do the hack was usable on any device that could run the code, not simply one device coded by some group.

personally i wouls stick with gateway, because the above facts (altough there isn't any proof that they copied their 2.0 firmware, they did with the 1.2 firware)

But nobody will blame you if you want to save some bucks and go with 3dslink or an r4 (except some fanboys). my guess is that in the end they both hve the same fuetures set, but gateway only has the updates a little bit earlier

It's no more false than the claim they aren't doing that. Both have no solid proof to support them, thus it's still best to stick with Gateway for now. (although i'd personally say wait a while longer if you can and see how things play out)

unless you have proof the "clones" are stealing gateway's code, you should probably stop saying they do like its been proven, it makes you look like a gateway fanboy(which you probably are based on your posts)

So the end answer to this is that the hardware itself is different enough that you cant run software from the others? Couldnt one smart person just make edits to make it work on another hardware?
Also if someone released a clone of the current gateway, wouldnt that be compatible will all firmware of gateway then?

Bought a gateway either way.

The hardware is still basically the same, the layouts are just different for the most part. So the code isn't going to work right off the bat, a few tweaks need to be made, that's all.
