beware everyone try not make same mistake as me. this CMD point is beyond repair as trace is only just visible :( might see if i can buy another 3dsxl @ 4.4

Its too bad you pulled that CMD point because I really liked what you were doing with the usb breakout port......really for XL users one of these hardware mod companies (like team executer) should be able to make a solderless kit that uses a preformed breadboard with pogopins and then a little micro usb breakout board pre wired to the pogo board. I just wonder if anyone will bother with the number of exploitable units (4.5 and below) shrinking all the time and with a software only Emunand solution just around the corner. There are still new 2012 made XLs to be had at reatail in the US (just picked one up myself a few weeks ago) but I think by the end of the holidays they will be pretty much gone.

Good work though....do you think you would have been OK if you had just used a more thin/supple wire?

My 4.5 3DS XL should arrive next week. Before I get started on this I'd like to ask a few noob questions

1. What wire should I use? I have kynar wire, old ribbon cable and old AV cables.

2. Can I use the SD reader built into my laptop instead of a USB one?

EDIT

I'm not sure if this video has been mentioned earlier in the thread, but its very helpful.

Just use softer wires and there is no risk of the contact pad breaking off, besides even if you break it off you can solder to the trace just make sure you use the right trace :) (and even then you can do it but it wont be pretty :P)

I too have a gateway and did the mod so i can switch freely between just like with emunand, however even when you can read/write the nand with gateway and something ever goes wrong gateway wont be able to boot anymore.

A hardware solution will then still be able to recover it by rewriting the last dump gateway made :)

I recommend a flexible ribbon cable or the innards from a cat5 network cable, the wires inside the cat 5 are flexible and even colored coded !

The SD Card Reader in your computer should work, however a few people had to bridge the write lock switch as it wouldn't work otherwise and that will not be easy on something in your laptop ^^

Two quick questions....

1. What is the capacity of the NAND in the 3DS XL?

2. Can I use any old SD card (like an old 512mb one) on the other end of the cable (I am assuming yes)

Hmmmm!
What do you have in this filthy head of yours?! :D hehehe
Just curious... BTW, I'm eager to know what your're up to.

Cheers!

Well actually I was just being an empty head, not thinking that I would need to use an SD card adapter......but I see where you are going with this in that wouldn't it be interesting if we could create a 'dual' nand using this method and somehow running the secondary nand from a connected SD card tucked under the shell.......above my pay grade....but surely if this can be done with ps3/x360 someone could make a kit to do it with a 3DS....

Ashen12345 What connector block is that you have used in the back? I have a friend doing the soldering for me onto the 3ds side but once I have it back I would really like to add a similar connection block for ease of use

Cheers,

Shepe

eMMC command, data and clock signal lines are internally bridged to the SD controller (which I suspect is separate from the one in the SD slot). Without a way of cutting those, then plugging your SD card (as MMC uses SD IO standard) could posibly allow you run a removable NAND (even micro SDs).

Some devs will say, but hey micro SDs have more bits of checking, yes, but as long the micro SD(onboard controller) can fall to DAT0 (single block transfer, SD mode), it will work

Its just some random headers and pins I salvaged from something or other. I do a lot of modding, so I'm constantly salvaging stuff like this from broken things. There's enough room back there that you could probably use a micro/mini usb connector or something similar instead. Or search around for some small headers/pins combo.

is the CLK point under the cartridge reader that much larger than the one on back of the 3ds motherboard? doing some soldering now and trying to get a wire to stick to that point has been frustrating me...

edit: also i noticed my pcb didn't look exactly like some of the pics i saw itt (the white markings were slightly different). took me a bit to find the small hole on the back

I have another brandnew Silver XL on 4.4 :) woohoo going to transfer motherboard into red XL case with microusb breakout and and lower wattage on my iron etc and glue cables down just after solder points so they can not move :)

Im back in business lol

That is good news........I guess one can never have too many 3DSes....lol.

Ok so has anyone that has done an upgrade/downgrade talk about the eShop content....someone said that when you downgrade it 'deletes' all of your purchased items from your SD card.....is this true, or is just the tickets purchased since upgrade that get deleted? I would assume if you downgrade and then re-upgrade using a backed up version of your upgraded nand that your tickets/software will still be present.

Can someone please clear this up and this could be a real hassle, especially when EmuNand gets here because presumably after a power off you will resume to 4.5 on the hardware nand and have to run the Gateway launcher to get back to 6.3 Emunand.....does this mean we will lose all our eshop stuff?

Lastly.....ok so the Nand is 1GB.....but how big is the actual code for a firmware....I ask this because if it is 512mb or smaller then wouldn't in theory it be possible to build a dual Nand image that always boots into 4.5 (which is exploitable) then someone make a little app that acts as a switch...so you go and do the ds/profile move and it runs an app that essentially resets the address pointer in the nand to the location of the second firmware and reboots you into 6.x or beyond.....now that would be cool....dual nand all the way!

I can confirm i was going between the two 4.4 & 6.3 with eshop content. I doesn't delete anything when flashing back your 4.4/5 gw fw. As long as you backup your 6.3 with any new purchases before downgrading again

Ok, so, I have a 4.3 backup.
I updated via internet to 6.3 and went to the eShop to buy Steamworld Dig. After that I made a backup.
If I go back to 4.3 and switch to my Gateway (which I use with a different SD Card), If I go back to 6.3 using my 6.3 backup after I buying Steamword Dig (changing to the game SD card), will it be playable again?

I have another question. Where is the save for eShop games stored?
I mean, made a small progress in Steamworld Dig. If I revert to my 6.3 backup and play a little more, making some more progress and go back to my 4.3, If I doesn't backup my "new" 6.3 after I played some more Steamworld Dig, will I lose this new progress? I'm trying to know if my eShop games saves are stored in the NAND or in the SD Card the game is.

Cheers!

Thanks for dispelling the nonsense that some other poster was spreading about content on the card being deleted. I have decided I am giving Gateway until after this Thanksgiving weekend (too busy with family and such) to release EmuNand and if it isn't out then I am going to crack the case and do the hardware mod on my 4.3 XL. I really want to do the transfer of content from my 6.3 XL because the thing is pretty much in new condition with box and all and I want to sell it as I really don't need 2 XL units (and I have a standard 3DS on 4.5 also).
