I'm considering buying a white star wars PSP 2000. It is on firmware 6.60.

Is it possible to install a permanent hack on this model? I did some research but I could only find threads that seemed quite outdated.

i don't know about this model specifically. the rule of thumb is that if it had 6.20 on it at one point, it can be safely downgraded, and you can install the permanent CFW. the non-permanent one isn't a big deal at all. when you power cycle the psp you simply need to run the hack again, it takes all of 8 seconds.

The PSP is used so I have no way of knowing if it had 6.20 on it. But re-hacking it each time isn't too difficult so I think I might go for it. Thanks!

The short answer is "Yes, every model of PSP is hackable as of today", the long answer is "If you want a permanent hack to avoid using Fast Recovery, depending on the motherboard it may or may not be difficult, but it's also possible".

If the PSP has a Data Code of 8B or below, it's Pandora-Compatible and cIPL-Compatible and as such it can be downgraded at any given time to any revision of firmware and it can be permahacked using the cIPL Flasher regardless of which firmware is installed.

If the Data Code is above that, it's not Pandora-Compatible or cIPL-Compatible, however you can downgrade it to 6.20 using Chronoswitch and install the 6.20 permahack.

All of those procedures and more are covered in the "How to Softmod (Hack) Your PSP" guide by Rydian.

Either way, you end up with a permahacked PSP - I hope that was helpful.

It turns out the PSP in question (which i have right now) is actually on firmware 6.20 so things should go pretty smooth for me.

EDIT: Installed permanent patch and everything is fine :)

Do check the Data Code - if the PSP is cIPL-Compatible then it's beneficial for you to update to 6.60 and use cIPL Flasher instead of the Perm Patch. ;) Compatibility-wise both firmware are practically identical, but the latter gives you access to Music Unlimited as far as I remember.

If you don't really care about that then the experience will be similar on both firmwares, the devil is in the details.

cIPL flashes a custom IPL onto the NAND of the system and boots directly into the CFW with an option to boot into OFW using a button combination, the Perm Patch on the other hand boots into the OFW and loads the CFW modules on-top, making the boot time ever so slightly longer and more straining on the hardware.
