Could it be possible that Smileboom, makers of the popular Petit Computer for the DSi, beat the Gateway to first offer true 3D homebrew to the masses?

http://smileboom.com/special/ptcm2/html_third.php

This is just a teaser page, and Google Translate will not help* with the Japanese text in image form, but it clearly is hinting (no, confirming) at a 3DS sequel to Petit Computer!
Stay tuned! ^_^

*could somebody help translate?

That's pretty nifty, but what could it really be used for?
There's been a lot of really nice homebrew games released for PTC, most of it by the Japanese, but I really think this will take off on the 3DS to a much higher degree than the predecessor.

Even temp might care this time. :P

hopefully they improve the method of sharing games this time around. the scanning of the QR codes is not bad for simple programs, but when they start getting big its not uncommon to scan like 10-15 qr codes for one program. I don't see what stopping them from saving the programs on SD card and allowing games/programs be shared that way.

Here's the text, in a copy and pastable form.

未来の技術で機能ー新。
BASICにもうー度「こんにちは」。
ペチコン
3号(仮称)
ニンテンドー3DSダウンロードソフト
近日発売

I'm not really sure what the first two lines are getting at. The next two say it's tentatively called petitcomputer v3. The second to last line says Nintendo 3ds download software, not sure what that refers to (i'm guessing either homebrew, or that they found an exploit in some official downloadable software, but i'm not sure). The last line says coming soon.

In reality, i'm sorry to say, nintendo would not allow them to release a exploit to really run full 3ds mode homebrew :)

Google Translate for those of you too lazy:

Function over new technology in the future.
BASIC to another over time "Hello".
Pechikon
No. 3 (tentative name)
Nintendo 3DS download software
Coming soon

(Thank RachelB)

You kids have no clue what you're talking about.

Petit Computer for the DSi was homebrew to run simple programs coded in BASIC. This has nothing to do with kernel exploitation or directly accessing the 3DS hardware.

One reason why PTC on DSi wasn't as big of a success as it could have been was because those that wanted to make games and apps on handhelds with simple 2D capabilities already had access to them since the GBA, with numerous tools having taken years of development to get them to where it is now. With them announcing a 3DS version, it could make for an actual success because being able to make your own homebrew games on the 3DS via other means hasn't been achieved yet, nor will it make actual use of its features for a number of years. not to mention that many features, like glasses-free 3D, gyroscope, etc will likely be accessible with PTCv3.

A question to anyone with enough 3DS knowledge. I'm assuming PTCv3 will attempt to do things the DSi version can do (like sprites and background layers), but with using the 3D hardware instead of the 2D hardware. I would assume that they could mimic 2D background layers using a bunch of individual polygons like tiles do, but can the fixed shader set allow such a feature using only one large polygon?

Big Update. (from a JP trade show)
http://nintendoeverything.com/first-petit-computer-3ds-details/

Original Japanese source in Googlish:
Source
(they mention something about a Z axis, but the translation is difficult to make out. Still hopes are high we'll get poly support for this version)

- You can edit until line 999,999
- Circle Pad Pro support
- You can color code words
- You can fold the program display
- You can edit multiple sources (up to 4)
- Painting function with standard equipment
- Enhanced editing features (such as an undo function and multi-line copying)
- Input supports the device’s microphone, camera, sensors, etc
- User work can be managed on the server
- Has a link with the Detune’s application (music software)

I can't wait to code hundreds of lines of code on a tiny touchscreen!

...wait.

Seriously though, I hope it has an option to import code from .txt files. Without a keyboard at hand stuff like this is a massive pain.

Out of question is any emulator (I'm thinking something simple like the 2600) feasible when coding in BASIC on something like the 3DS?
Chip 8 is possible with the current petitcom (I did it). Maybe that bodes well for the Atari 2600 with the 3D version, and if we're lucky NES. But I really doubt it. :P

That was possible with 3rd party PC software with Petit Computer DSi. Hopefully this feature will be native with Petit 3D.

To be honest, I preferred using the DS input over a text editor, its not as bad as you think. Petit Computer is fun.
