Hacking PS3 CFW Advantages?

I don't care about multiplayer because I have another PS3. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Not exhaustive but my two main items:
Pro - you can rip your games to your HDD to load off of it.
Con - no online/risky.

Pro you can pirate almost every game for the PS1/PS2/PS3/PSN/PSP on one machine. (PS2 is better if your PS3 is one of the full BC units.)

Pro you can use the wonderful Showtime media player and stream from any windows based PC on your network with very little effort along with many other sources via plugins and I believe it is compatible with FTP and other servers? (Not sure what else it supports since I was able to just right click share folders and it auto picked up in Showtime.)

Pro Emulation is getting much better on the PS3 (Still not as polished as it is on the Wii in my opinion but it works very well none the less.)

Downside is trying to figure out how to set all that stuff up in the fist place and you of course cannot go on PSN with you already mention.

If you don't care about going on PSN for multi player there really isn't any real downsides for you. (Maybe if you want to use Netflix? Supposedly you can still go on Netflix but I have blocked all PSN access at my router for the PS3 and Netflix will get to where its about to start streaming my movie and it kicks me off... very annoying.)

Edit: I forgot to add that depending on your CFW you can also do some really neat things like disabling Cinavia... lol

No online - no cons, very easy. Just read the post above. Console hacking has been done pretty gracely. Some readings and it will be easy to use.

Cons really are no multiplayer gaming, You should be fine to go to PSN and download legit PSN stuff.

Pros are homebrews, playing backup without ODE, and you can disable HDCP (makes it much easier to record gameplay).

Is gameplay encrypted on the PS3? I honestly don't know as I have never once tried to record anything from it... lol my experience with recording game play video's ended with the NES or SNES on a VCR... back when I used to record hard parts in games and watch them to see what I was doing wrong after I had calmed down a bit.

Gameplay is encrypted with HDCP by default. That's why most people record PS3 from component instead.

With CFW, you can turn of HDCP at debug settings.

Pro's:

• Homebrew, and there's plenty of it. Emulators, applications, homebrew games - you name it
• OtherOS++, if you're in any way interested in running a Linux distribution on your system
• Ripping software allows for putting your games on an HDD, meaning you preserve your original discs, the laser lens and cut down on loading times
• Custom PS2 classics injectors allow for playing PS2 games which aren't available on PSN. If you have PS2 titles you'd like to play on the PS3, this is the answer to your problems
• PSP game compatibility via PSP injectors, so that you can enjoy all those portable games on the big screen

Con's:

• Risky PSN functionality which you don't care about anyways

In other words, you lose nothing and you gain so, so much.
