Okay, question. Thinking about getting a retail X/Y copy, updating to 6.1 and just getting a DS2 to tide me over 'till the Gateway team update their cart to work on 6.1 (I realize there's a chance I'll either be waiting a very long time, it'll never happen, or the wait may not be too long). Will any online features of Pokémon X/Y require me to update my 3DS to the latest firmware, or can I stay on 6.1?
If there is any DLC and you want to download it, you'll be asked to do a connection to the eShop for the transaction to work.
Also, the Pokemon app that'll allow you to store Pokemon and stuff, will have to be downloaded from the eshop, which requires the latest update.

So basically anything eShop-related will require an update. Good to know. I don't imagine I'd use the eShop at all, but then again, I don't know what Game Freak/Nintendo'll come out with in the future.

What's the latest firmware? 6.3.1.12x? If so, then it might not be so bad since DS2 works on that firmware.

It's 6.3.0-12 on mine at least and it's the last update I've received.

As for the eshop things... You'll probably use Pokemon Bank, which you'll have to download from the eShop.

Bah, 3DS flashcarts are very much in their infancy right now, so maybe going legit for now will be the best thing to do since it'll give the 3DS flashcart scene time to mature (and hopefully Supercard'll join in on the fun), more teams to create their own carts and their prices to go down some.

For those asking about if Pokemon will force you to update to latest: I believe there's already a patch for the game, and it could be possible that you need it to go online, meaning it'd force you to the latest firmware.

I don't see how they could do that??? From a marketing stand point they would alienate many people who don't have access to wi fi or people who just don't want to go online with there product for what ever reason. Thats why games come with the required update already with the product they are trying to use. Although I don't know why it would be an issue 6.1 renders the Gate Way at this moment in time useless. Unless you were trying to access the eshop then yes of course you would have to update to the latest firmware to use the eshop, but remember no one is forcing you.

Every game before pokemon X/Y just need the firmware that comes bundled on the cart to utilize all of its online feature. Its safe to assume this will be the case for X/Y and future games.

You guys are forgetting Mario Kart 7. That had a patch for online. Why couldn't Pokemon?
I am still laughing at the people who got the gateway. How did they not see this coming HERPA DURPA DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Buy your games and live happy and trouble free. When you grow bored of those games sell them online for close to what you paid and buy a new game simple. Support game development and get titles when they are released with all features trouble free.
We get it, you work for Nintendo and don't like piracy. But for me, I've already got my money's worth from Gateway and still have a bunch of more games to go.

There's also the possibility of Homebrew, I still would like to see some kind of Quake 3 port available once they gain access to the extra ram. I wouldn't have bought a Gateway had I thought there would never be Homebrew support. I do realize this isn't the case for most people, as most whom buy a GW3DS seem to only be interested in Commercial games.

The Gateway is more trouble than it is worth, you'll be waiting a VERY long time, chances are the 3DS XL you get will be updated anyway so no Gateway compatibility.
Since you are getting them tonight, I don't think you want to wait for the 1year+ it takes for gateway to update for Pokemon compatibility.

I guess currently having access to all the 3ds games except for 3 with the ability to play every region is not worth it? You know they will add compatibility for those game eventually and it will definitely be a lot faster than this guy says.

Its people like this that said that the gateway card was a sham and was never coming to market. The team over at gateway keep on making them eat their words though :).

you'll be waiting a VERY long time for any card to come to market

you'll be waiting a VERY long time for multi region support

you'll be waiting a VERY long time to play games that require a higher firmware

and now....

you'll be waiting a VERY long time to play pokemon x/y

Lets see exactly how long "a VERY long time" is this time. Making pokemon work doesn't seem like a huge leap at all from what they have managed to accomplish and continue to do.

Guys, please don't feed the troll.

I have to keep telling myself this.

Also, my theory is that gateway saved part 2 of their update for the release of Pokémon, they probably want to test that before unleashing the update.
Either way, they seem to be doing a lot of good work so I wouldn't discount a fix for anything at all given their track record.

If the Gateway team announces online working on games like Pokémon X/Y, then it'd seriously make me reconsider my decision of getting a DS2, buying Pokémon Y (Tyranitar and Dragalge ftw!) and just waiting it out until Supercard create their own 3DS flashcart.
