River City Ransom is a classic NES beat-um-up that successfully infused a great story, fun fighting, and RPG-like elements. The game has a cult following that has allowed it to remain popular with each new generation of retro gamers, perhaps due to its GBA "remake" titled River City Ransom EX. On more than one occasion, a sequel to the original game has been in various stages of development, yet for different reasons the projects were never completed. After the trademark lapsed and was quickly picked up, a kickstarter campaign followed that promised to properly reimagine the spirit of the original game in a modern day sequel. As of today the campaign has been fully funded, yes we will be seeing a proper RCR sequel on at least the Windows operating systems. The stretch goals include other operating systems, next gen consoles, and handhelds, but with 70 hours to go it is yet unclear if these releases will even be considered.
If you follow me on Twitter then you may have read the conversation that involved a GCW Zero port. It would appear that the RCRU team is interested in such a release but would need to hit their Linux stretch goals for such a thing to be seriously considered. There is also the matter that MonoGame would need to be ported to MIPS and the fact that OpenGL ES 2.0 is still in beta.
There is still time to support this project, the digital buy in level is at $15. For more information on this project please see the links below.
