Most likely you won’t be able to do so since the eShop games are “tied” to the console (not sure about the updates) but you could try since there is no risk. Definitely worth it. Tell me the results please since I consider buying the game too. I might be wrong.
Will take a couple of days, but ill be sure to post the results on here.

I'm pretty sure it won't work. The update data will be downloaded to the SD card, and most likely signed using your friend's signing key. When you put the card back in your 3DS, it will probably go back to being an out of date version of the game.

Risk depends on what's updated. If it's just bug fixes, there's probably no risk. If it adds to or changes anything in the save data then it might not be possible to load the game without resetting the save data, or it could even be considered corrupt by the other 3DS. It all depends on how Nintendo implemented updates, but I don't think we can guarantee "no risk".

I completely forgot about the encription, that means it probably wont work. It would just create a useless update file my 3DS wouldnt be able to read.

So it’s not possible to go online without the latest firmware... RachelB provided wrong info here.
I was thinking of getting ACNL too, but since it is no possible to go online on 4.5 and use Gateway, there is no point in doing so.
I went online just today. I'm still on 4.5. It's possible the pal version is different, i guess.

Correct! The games do not have their own system for updates, it's basically a link to the e-shop application from the game. Forces us to update the system. :(
this is what i thought, just wanted to make sure :)
so yes, nintendo can make it if you want to play online you need to download an update for the game, and at the moment even if we can play some games that require a firmware above 4.5 using gateway, we cannot get to the eshop, it is not like a true firmware spoofer etc.

when i wanted to play online with animal crossing i was tied between keeping my relatively un-updated 3ds, or updating so i can download the game update and play online, and i updated.
nintendo could do 'easy' things, like simply having to to go online, and download a free 'license' for the game to play online, via the shop. and without that you cannot play online.
that way, even if gateway will let us play online, but until we can access the eshop, or install dlc/'wads' (whatever they will be) we would not be able to play online.

so even if gateway let you play online, you would not be able to go online with mario kart (unless you have the update on your 3ds already), and you would not be able to go online with the japanese version of animal crossing, what other games have updates? a list should be made.

Well, for the purpose of research bought PAL ACNL and will report on Sunday when it gets delivered about online (hopefully) working on 4.5.

I thought gateway automatically disabled online features when the 3DS enters gateway mode? Is this not true?

i don't know if they do it on purpose, but yes from what i have read online does not work with gateway (at least at the moment)
but i am partially talking about in the future

There are 2 onlines: Not the in game one where you go the island or visit people.

I think he meant the one on the Title Screen of Animal Crossing....where it tells you to go to newest firmware. I think the update fixes and bugs or reworks small things in ACNL.

OP....I don't think it is worth it if you have Gateway.

Well, ACNL was delivered today, I have PAL console, so I updated with the cartridge to 4.5 and the game works fine. If I choose update from the menu I can decline it. I can download present from the post office, online connectivity seems fine too, but I’m not advanced enough to visit anyone’s home.

Update:
I've made friends with complete stranger today, we exchanged our friend codes and I was able to visit his town. We went to the island, played minigames, caught some bugs and fish, etc. It was really fun.
Stranger is on 6.3, ACNL is updated too.
So, conclusion: it’s OK to buy the PAL version of the game, online works, the game does not force you to update (though the update is present). You can update system FW with the cartridge and it’s safe.

Will report if I find any broken online features.

so there is an update for animal crossing (at least the europe version) or not?
if there is, you can download it, and delete it, but then to get it again you would have to download it again, you might be able to back it up from the sd card.
what i do when i do not want to use the 1.1 update for animal crossing (japan) i simply eject the sd card before i load the game (wouldn't work if you are using the digital version).
then you can put the sd card back in once it has loaded up and you are on the title screen, otherwise you won't be able to save screenshots etc.

There is but it’s not necessary. If I choose to update, the game tries to connect to the eShop, fails and asks me to update firmware. (so the update is not even downloaded) I go back to the menu and load my save. No manipulations with the SD-card needed here.
Why do you do so? Playing without the 1.1 update? Since I confirm that there is no incompatibility between the version. At least on PAL.

Guys, please, include your firmware, region and whether ACNL is updated or not in your post since we’re trying to research a little.

What's that 1.1 update? Even on my 6.3 3DS I think I don't have this and online works fine.
When I got the game few days ago I tried to go on the update screen from the game menu and it said no updates available. Or maybe it's extremely new or already included in my game?
On my 4.5 it's the same, online works fine too.

well on the japanese region of the game you need to update if you want to play online, and probably if you want to play via local wireless with people on the 1.1 update too.
