What does it stand for? Why did Nintendo choose to name it ds, is it because of the dual screens?
Or does it mean doorstop aka 2ds. Anyway they really used a marketable name. You can have ds, dsi(xl), 3ds(xl),2ds, HDS, 4DS and much more. Do you think it's a good name, if not why not and what would you change it to? I personally like it.

The 3DS is two different things combined. The DS is still dual screen, because there are 2 screens (also shows that it is still part of the DS line of consoles). The 3D at the beginning is for the 3D screen, much like the 2D in 2DS is referring to the 2D screen it has.

EDIT: And I believe the 'i' in DSi was a play on the word 'eye', because of the camera that the system featured.

Actually it was "Nitro", hence the NTR-XXX on all of the hardware.
Both. First it was Nitro internally, then "Dual Screen" became the pre-release name, which people liked, so they kept it, but shortened it to just DS. Then on a press conference, they announced that they also want that DS to stand for something else, namely Developers' System.
From what I recall from the DSi's pre-release, the "i" in the DSi stands for "I" or "individual". They had achieved saturation with DS-owning households on the home front, so they tried to make a more personal DS to get households to have several handheld gaming systems.
And the 3DS is just a contraction of "3D DS", although you could also interpret it as "3D screen".

Not quite. Developer's System, then Nitro, then Dual Screen.

Wasn't it at one point a Game Boy?

I swear I can remember "Game Boy DS" at some point.

Probably by someone who didnt know what they were talking about. The Gameboy line ended with the GBA Micro. When the DS came out in late 2004, the name was changed, dropping the GB.

DS = Die Sony

DSL (Lite) = Die Sony Literally

DSi = Die Sony Immediately

3DS = 3 times Die Sony

Your post was off-topic, useless, not very funny and you should feel bad. :angry:

(Actually it was pretty cheeky and clever, well done. :P )

DS = Dumb Shit
GB = Grand Bitches
GBA = Good Bombs Away
GBA SP = Grand Bitches Asking Shit Poo

(ok, what the fuck?)

Dual Screen, Developer's Special, and Developer's System where was the DS stood for. The most obvious is Dual Screen as it has two screens. It could have very well been called the Nintendo TS for Nintendo Touch-Screen. Also, hear 'bout that Nintendo 1DS? LUL!

GBL: Game Boy Light (Backlit Screen, Japan Only)

DS: Dual Screen.
3DS: 3D Dual Screen (D for 3D and D for DS).
2DS: 2D Dual Screen (D for 2D and D for DS).
