My guess would be that it evolved from pranks of guys in chat rooms pretend to be girls, like cops or guys who just want shits and giggles.

The fact that it does actually happen sometimes. A lot of guys join forums pretending to be girls so they can get help faster. Us guys have a strong desire to save a damsel in distress. It's in our blood. Next time you see a new user with a girl's name ask for help, pay attention to how fast replies come.
