Hacking New Gateway Update 29/07/2013

i got myself a 3DS especially for testing so doesnt matter how i screw it up
currently on 3.0.0 to use the Gateway to update it to 4.5.0 with a game
if that breaks it i have more spare 3DS's to continue the testing on

One quick question on preventing firmware updates.
I am currently on 4.3.x (like this out of the box, never been updated).

1) I have my wifi switch permanently "off"
2) I do not have any internet connections installed
3) I have turned off streetpass
4) I have turned off spotpass

Can my 3DS still "download" an update and prompt me to update it?
Is there any way this can happen? Or is it impossible?

long as its disabled by the switch when out and about tho

if it hits a Nintendo Zone or Free WiFi it will download a update

I thought that with spotpass or streetpass or something there is still a way your console can find out there is a new update, and after this, your console will keep pestering you to update...

It's just a regular DS flashcard, for booting up some "fix" for the console.
I wouldn't get too excited about it. They say on their homepage it is just a regular DS flashcard.

Yeah, I know, but still. That exploit part really has me intrigued, even though I don't know jack shit about the inner workings of these things. Maybe it will come complete with an "Enjoy Yourself, All Pleasure in it" slogan.

I streetpass between my v4.5 and v6 3ds's all the time and no nagging or downloads for my 4.5 systems.

And even if you somehow did download an update, you could always reformat the system to get rid of it. No big deal since your system is new. Anyway, keeping the wifi switch off is the best fool-proof prevention measure.

I feel like it will more than likely bear similarities to the R4 line. Although, that interface REALLY was not as awful as some of the others (I'm glaring at you Top Toy DS). I'll try and help out when possible. But yeesh, these guys are so damned impatient for the tiniest things. It's gonna be a long week for the reviewers to get their samples, and I for one applaud Devin for sticking up to all the pressure.

the only way to get the update prompt

1) leave it on a WiFi connection with Internet Access
2) having the network enabled and passing a Open WiFi or Nintendo Zone
3) placing in a game card with the update required
4) go under settings and check for update while on WiFi

There's a little known 5), Playing local cartridge multi-player with a higher firmware system.

I don't know if downloadable game local multiplayer does the same.

Can't blame you, doesn't seem 3DS lan parties ever really caught on the way Nintendo envisioned. Not with a battery life of 3 hours or so.
