In the car industry, Formula 1 provides a commercial testbed for cutting-edge technologies. The Ubuntu Edge project aims to do the same for the mobile phone industry -- to provide a low-volume, high-technology platform, crowdfunded by enthusiasts and mobile computing professionals. A pioneering project that accelerates the adoption of new technologies and drives them down into the mainstream.

This beautifully crafted smartphone is a proving ground for the most advanced mobile technologies on the horizon, a showpiece for true mobile innovation. And at the heart of it all is convergence: connect to any monitor and this Ubuntu phone transforms into an Ubuntu PC, with a fully integrated desktop OS and shared access to all files.

We’re fascinated by converged computing, the idea that the smartphone in your pocket can also be the brain of the PC on your desk. We’ve shaped Ubuntu so you can transition seamlessly between the two environments. Now all that’s needed is a phone that’s designed from the ground up to be a PC as well.

The Ubuntu Edge is our very own superphone, a catalyst to drive the next generation of personal computing.
They still have a long way to go,man it's high, but a very interesting concept. If you had the most cutting-edge phone in your hand, would you use it as your PC? Can you imagine a ~5.5-6in version (aka phablet) of this phone?

This wouldn't be anywhere near powerful enough to do the things I would need it to do on a daily basis, so not interested.

For businesses, though, this could be interesting.

Honestly I think the phone itself is a bit silly as well as the pricing, but I can also honestly say I'd buy one if it were cheap enough.

Then again, it would probably be cheaper to just buy a Raspberry Pi if you want a small, easy PC on the go.

Also, Ubuntu Mobile is slowly being ported to smart phones and tablets and would probably be more ideal than this.

$32 million? They actually believe that they can achieve this number?

This team really needed someone to wake them up before they IndieGoGo.

I think they raised $2 million in the first day (vaguely recalling from a conversation I had with someone about it last week). However, $7 million in 7 days isn't looking good when they need $32 million over 30 days, especially when most of the initial hype is over.

Ironically, Canonical could easily afford to put a lot of money behind this project themselves and asked for a much lower figure from potential backers. Heck, I bet Mark Shuttleworth could fund it himself if he wanted to. It just seems a little greedy to ask the public to put up so much.

If the fundraising keep the way it is going they will achieve this a couple of days early.

That's one edgy stretch goal. harharhar... puns... puns everywhere!

$32 million is a big goal. A HUGE goal. None of the technologies mentioned were particularly exciting or amazing as he claimed, just expensive. Sapphire screen? Pretty awesome but hella expensive.

I've thought about putting UbuntuPhone onto my GNex to see what it's like but the main block for me would be getting back to my current setup that I really love.

I lol'd at the guy wearing Crooks and Castles in the first video.

The device itself looks decent but why Sapphire Crystal screen. Seems a bit excessive. HAS AS MUCH RAM AS THE COMPUTER I'M SITTING AT RIGHT NOW

Seriously? Tell me another phone that's out or coming out with the same, if not even higher, specs.
No specs were given. You're funding the development of the phone not just it's manufacture.

Even then I don't see faster processors as a particularly "exciting or amazing" tech. I do like the idea of plugging it into a screen and running it as a desktop. THAT is exciting.

I see absolutely no point in dual-booting Android and Ubuntu - they'd be better off if they created a custom distro that's based on the PC version of the system, just with an added phone plugin.

I thought heard it somewhere, either way they going for the highest specs they can get possible, including the processor.

That's part of the point with these specs..

Why not? More people would probably get it because it runs android on it and/or try to run Android on it anyway.

The fundraising never keeps going the way it begins. It starts strong, then always slows down.

They have already raised near 7.5 mi, that's quite a lot.
Going that way, I dare to say their goal is still feasible.

128GB of storage
at least 4GB of RAM
The fastest CPU avaiable
A Saphire Crystal
Dual Boot: Android and Ubuntu.

It's like you completely ignored what I said in the post lol. Yes, going that way it would reach it most likely. But they never continue the way that they begin -> the first few days/week are always plentiful, then it always slows down. If you've been watching it since the start, you would have noticed that's pretty much already happened here.

Sure it have slowed down, they raised more than 2 mi on the first day, that's almost impossible to.
I'm just saying it is something feasible.
