I honestly never played either of the DS Mario and Luigi games. I played and loved Superstar Saga back on my old GBA in the day and loved it. I def want to get dream team. But can anyone tell me, is there any type of over-arching story where it would benefit me to play Partners In Time and Bowser's Inside Story before Dream Team? Now don't bother arguing that both titles are fantastic. I am aware of this, but I just want to make sure that there isn't a big deal if I play the titles out of order. I've never sensed there was an overarching theme or multiple allusions to past titles, but I honestly don't know, so I wanted to make sure.
Nah, not really. BiS had a small optional part where the enemies from PiT appeared though, so it's likely Dream Team will include some reference or character from one of the older games. (in fact, a character from Superstar Saga was confirmed IIRC) For the most part they are unrelated though.

Well we don't know how the story in dream team relates but defiantly try bowsers inside story as that has to do with super star saga more.

As far as story goes, there is a fraction of continuity, but it is very subtle. Like Fawful, Cackletta's second-in-command from Superstar Saga, who reappears in an underground cave in Partners in Time and talking about wanting to take revenge on the Mario Bros., and then he shows up in Bowser's Inside Story as the main antagonist.
He dies in Bowser's Inside Story
And then there's the Shroobs from Partners in Time (who took over Peach's Castle in the past), that can be found frozen in the Castle's freezer in BiS.
You can expect a handful of Superstar Saga references in Dream Team, it's likely there might be some sort of chronological relevancy, but there's nothing worth playing through them in order, though. The central plot of every game is very open-closed.

It would be very nice if someone could tell me which firmware this game requires (5.X or 6.X), or in other words, which update comes bundled with this game.

Probably 6.X.

Actually id say high chance of 5.0.0 but not 6.0.0
maybe even 4.5.0 due to Animal Crossing was 4.5.0

getting this tomorrow as soon as i wake up and JB opens

also about time we get a game 1st ^_^

It comes out Saturday in Australia. Unless JB is breaking the street date, you're gonna have to wait another day. I know, sucks, but considering the U.S. has to wait a month we've nothing to complain about.

because if you get a game early you are really going to taddle on that shop

It's a huge risk is all. All Nintendo needs is even a hint of a rumour that a random JB shop will be selling early without approval, they can find it right here in this thread even, and then they'll be all over their ass, which means (if it turns out to be true) a $10,000 fine and possibly more. Not saying that they aren't stupid daring enough to try sell a game a mere 24 hours early, but it's still a huge risk.
