Hey, so I just bought a PS3 with OFW 3.55 since I read somewhere that that was all I needed to soft-mod it. And then I looked at the sticky guide here on how to install CFW on OFW 3.55, but that guide had terrible links so Im making my own thread to ask about this. Are there several custom 3.55 firmwares or just one? If there are several, which one is the best one? After I've installed it I'm guessing I should install MultiMAN, which I assume should work like the backup loader on my Wii. After that I would like to play my games from an external hard drive, is this possible and do I need to do something special to enable it (like download another program or such) ?

I read a couple of comments while I downloaded games from various sites that made it seem like it was quite difficult to make some games work, is there anything I can do to ensure that every game works? Or do I need to find a new solution for every problem game?

Is the proccess as simple as I think it is? Is it just "Ps3 OFW 3.55>install CFW 3.55>install multiman>plug in external harddrive with games on>play games with multiman" ?

Yep it's that simple. I recommend Rebug CFW by the way. You can install the latest version which I recommend, or you can install a 3.55 version but it requires you to patch the games on your USB HDD.

If you want to save yourself a lot of potential work and frustration, I would recommend you update to a higher CFW. I can personally vouch for Rogero's CFW.

My ps3 was at 3.55 for quite a while, until I recently updated to rebug 4.41.2, using a guide from GBAtemp. I don't know why I waited so long to update, now all my games work without needing to find a 3.55 patch to get newer games working. I would recommend Rebug over Rogero, only because Rogero claims that he may not be updating his cfw anymore.

Okay, thanks for the quick answers! Where do I put the games on the external hard drive? Can I go from OFW 3.55 to CFW 3.55 and then jump to CFW 4.30? And what is "MD5 Checksum"?

MD5 checksum is a digital fingerprint. Basically it's a mathematical equation that will verify a digital file. If two files have the same md5 checksum they are the same file. It's used to see if a file has been changed in anyway, usually.

Is it anything I need to worry about?

make it like this: GAMES/name of game/PS3_GAME/USRDIR
Okay this confuses me a bit because I have two different games here, one PSN game and one regular game. The PSN game RAR file contained: PSNGAMENAME_full.pkg and PSNGAMENAME_crack-4.21.pkg , and I guess the crack should only be used if it doesn't work or something but I don't know where to put the other ".pkg" file. And the files for the regular game confuses me even more! I got from the rar file a map called "BLES-NUMBERS" , and inside it was a map called PS3_GAME and next to it in the "BLES-NUMBERS" map was a file callled "PS3_DISC.SFB . Inside "PS3_GAME" are three maps called: LICDIR, TROPDIR and USRDIR. Next to those maps were ICON0.PNG, PARAM.SFO, PIC1.PNG and PS3LOGO.DAT . Where do I put all of these files? Do I need all of them or should I look for specific files?

".pkg" files are put on the root folder of the external harddrive that needs to be formatted to FAT32. Usually, there should be a ".rap" to be used with reActPSN to activate the .pkg game, but don't quote me on that. I don't even use the crack: just install the game.pkg then activate it using reActPSN (you should look up a tutorial on that).

For the regular game, you need ALL of those files. You would copy the folder "BLES-NUMBERS" (this is a unique game id that every game has; don't worry about it. I recommend renaming that folder to the name of the game) to the GAMES folder. You put all those "regular" games into the GAMES folder. You need to use a backup manager to load these games. I recommend multiman

So your external harddrive should look like this (X being the path letter for yours).

X:/GAMES/BLES-NUMBERS/

X:/PSNGAMENAME_full.pkg

The part about installing the PSN game and then activating it feels a bit unfamiliar but I guess I'll understand what it means when I boot up ReActPSN. The other part about regular games was very well explained. It feels like I understand this a bit better now, thanks!

Okay, my PS3 package just arrived and I installed REBUG custom firmware 4.41 on it and Multiman 4.40, which supposedly should have the "Plug & Play Support For NTFS Drives & More" but I can't find my external NTFS hard drive anywhere in Multiman.. What do I do?

I read somewhere that external hard drive load is only possible if the games are smaller than 4gb and the external hard drive is FAT32 formatted, and that if the game is bigger than 4gb it must be loaded from the internal hard drive of the PS3. I dont see how this could work since all of the 32 games I downloaded are bigger than 4gb! And I can not load all of those games from the internal hard drive, not even the 500gb version could hold all of those games! How do people solve this porblem?

The games can be any size, as long as the game itself doesn't have any files in it larger than 4gb

I'll format my whole hard drive to Fat32 since I did buy it for the PS3. The only problem left is why MultiMAN wont recognize a NTFS hard drive even though MultiMAN is supposed to recognize NTFS drives without tampering with ID's and such.

Yeah I hear you. Tried and tried but the FAT32 route is good enough.
