From what I am seeing elsewhere this is only happening to the people that switched out the HD'S.

False. Kind of annoying that all the sites have grabbed on to that when it isn't true at all. Both of my systems have much larger drives than they came with. And both are happily running 4.45 already. I did manually update them via flash drive however so that may have been the real factor in determining brick or not.

Wonder if you would have been that lucky updating normally? What size are the HD's your running?

500GB Super Slim here, not really wanting to risk it at the moment. Especially considering how damn long it took to redownload everything (That stupid updated PS Store came out the same day I got it, and made everything 10x slower)

Well I am currently restoring my 320GB slim onto a 1TB hard drive and so I will update once it is finished and before I do anything else so if it messes up at least I have a backup.

Where did you download firmware 4.45 from? All I see is 4.41 which I just used to install to the new hard drive I just put in my legit PS3.
