Question. Is there a way to find out how much you've spent at Nookling Junction or any of the stores? I'm not sure how much more I have to spend to get to 12,000. *sigh*
Nope! Once your town has been around for seven days (the required time before a shop upgrade will occur), as long as you bought everything in the shop each day, the store should close down as soon as possible for the upgrade.

That's funny because I never baught anything in it except fortune cookies and I still got the expansion LOL

Nope, I alaways sell to RE-Tail
Perhaps play coins have a set bell value. Oh, and regardless, it's smart to purchase all the furniture each day due to the catalog system allowing you to reorder anything you previously owned. You never know when something might crop up that you'll eventually want that you'll never see again.

Or that someone else might want in the future :)

I only buy sets that interests me. That's it. Besides most of my sets are 'special' sets, not found in stores, in every animal crossing iteration.

We all play differently. I'm one of those people who likes getting everything they possibly can, getting as close to 100% as possible in a game with no actual ending.

As for me, I set out for uniqueness, for my character, my house. And since it is now possible, uniqueness for my town.
Collecting all tools, filling the museum are also things that I love doing. And also catching ghoti and insects.

EDIT:

The usual inventory I have on the island. May include more sharks, rainbow beetles, u get the idea. It all depends on catch rate.
I never pick creatures worth less than 8,000 bells
