Have you had any caffeine in the last 4 or 5 hours? I found out the hard way that i couldn't drink any fizzy drinks with caffeine in them because i'd just lie in bed for hours unable to sleep. If you're caffeined up then there's not much you can do but lie there....

Also, you may want to just try drinking some milk to give your stomach something to do and making sure you don't need to go to the toilet. That way you remove any impediments to natural sleep. Make sure you're not too warm as well. If all else fails read for a bit then tell yourself a story as you try to sleep.

Make sure to stop playing games (or other mind stimulating activities, like web browsing ;)) like two hours before you go to bed, then watch tv (preferably in bed, I usually set my laptop on my nightstand). That way when you feel like you can fall asleep you just turn it off and hit the pillow. I have problems with my mind going on and on, thinking about random stuff when I'm trying to go to sleep, I've been this way since I was 13 and this seems like the best way to deal with it for me.

Most importantly if you can't sleep, and you're just lying in bed awake, try watching some more tv. It'll take your mind off whatever you're thinking about. Good luck!

What cured my first bout of it was listening to music as I laid down, eventually I'd doze off, often quicker than I would have normally. Guess in time my mind equated it to sleepy time so I'd put on headphones, listen to music, and doze off.

This time around I've been fighting it. Nothing seems to work really. Best I can say is not to eat/drink after a certain time, nor have caffeine. Keep a consistent schedule.

NO! Do not listen to the guy! The last thing you want to do is ruin your brain into thinking your sleeping place is also TV place.
It is best to refrain from doing ANYTHING except for sleeping on your bed.
Make your mind mentally understand "sleep here" nothing else.

I always chew on an ice cube if I can't sleep. If that doesn't work try working out. ( nothing major, just crunches, push ups, sit ups, etc ) if all else fails do something. Pack school bags, homework, etc

Insomnia hits me pretty bad, and quite often. It's been like a lifelong companion of mine! As for suddenly becoming more awake when you try tog o to sleep, do you have a tendency to think a lot when you're in bed? If so, you may be triggering an unconscious response to become mentally active when you try going to sleep. I've certainly been there... and what generally works for me is to just meditate to calm yourself down and more importantly, to make yourself less mentally active. You can also try three general guidelines to help with insomnia in general:

1) Don't go to bed until you're tired. Obviously, if you're tired you're less likely to lie in bed awake. Also, doing so can build a bad (subconscious) habit of not going to sleep when you go to bed, instead triggering other responses in your body (like the aforementioned).
2) Reduce exposure to mentally or physically stimulating activity at least a couple of hours before going to bed. Also, try not to eat anything soon before going to bed, and try to limit your exposure to cooler colors (such as blue, white (due to being full-spectrum), etc.). Note: If you take in a large amount of food, you can actually make yourself drowsy, but there are a few reasons why you shouldn't take in a large meal just before bed. Depending on your eating habits, taking in a large meal in general can also have undesirable consequences.
3) Do things during the day to make sure you'll be tired at night. The easiest way to accomplish this is just to knock out a couple miles at some point during the day. If you're going to do cardio for the purpose of sleeping better at night, keep in mind that you want to go quickly enough that it doesn't take an inordinate amount of time to exhaust yourself, but not so fast that you find yourself getting winded long before actual exhaustion can begin to set in. The exception is HIIT, which will make you tired in both the long run and immediately after exercising, but it can be quite hard to do if you're not used to it. Also, if you find yourself getting up late, then expect to sleep late as well. Most people have a 2:1 waking:sleeping ratio, so if you wake up at 12PM, don't expect to feel sleepy until about 16 hours later, or until about 4AM. Depending on your circadian rhythm, this may or may not be a significant issue though.

Long post is long, but hopefully at least some of this information will be helpful to you >_>.

I was told the same thing when I went to the sleep specialists and whatnot, but I find that this works for me. TV at night makes me sleepy, naturally TV in bed helps me sleep. Obviously if this is not the case for you, don't do it.

Exhaust your self. Like doing basic exercises such as: push ups, jumping jacks, and crunches. ^_^ Not only will you not be bored, you'll be pumping-iron and doing healthy things that benefit you. Then you'll be tired and fall asleep. After a bath of course.
