Alright, so I finally got my old IDE computer out of storage - it's a Dell Dimension 2350 and the "Pause" trick while it's on the BIOS does seem to work perfectly fine, it'll stop the RAM testing until I press space.

However, I simply cannot get the hard drive to work with XboxHDM. I have tried literally everything - right now I have it stripped down to the bare minimum, my DVD drive is plugged in as a slave, and the hard drive is being plugged in as a master (both set by jumpers)

I have two xboxes, one of them is screwed up which is why I need to get this trick to work. However, using my "Virgin" system that doesn't have any mods or anything wrong with it... if I turn it on and hotswap, the XboxHDA disc sees it but says the drive is still locked. I have also tried playing a CD off the hard drive, pausing the song, then swapping the cables... still says it's locked. I have tried plugging it in after booting XboxHDA, while the BIOS is paused, everything. Both Xbox hard drives show the drive as being locked.

Does anyone know why this is happening? I was told the method where you play music off the hard drive, pause the song, then swap the cables was a foolproof way to do it. Given that the drives are being recognized by XboxHDA during boot, and I can see the ST-whatever model number of it, I don't think it's a problem with the motherboard not seeing the drive...

Best thing is and safest thing, is to get either 007 AUF, MechAssault or Splintercell and a hacked save.

You can kill your HDD quickly if you hotswap it the wrong way.

Make sure the Xbox is off.
Unplug the disc drive's IDE cable.
Turn the Xbox on.
It'll get error 12.
Drive should be unlocked, hotswap.

EDIT: You're only swapping the HDD's IDE cable, not the power cable of course.

yes, but I can't fix a semi-bricked console with Splinter Cell.

my issue is that I have the game but no way to get the save file onto my hard drive.

Either way I have a specific need for hotswapping so that I can fix the console I broke (I renamed the dashboard .xbe files to something else, I just need to name them back)

Unless I am lost somewhere, Devin, how is the drive going to unlock if there's no data connection going to it?

You said disk drive. DISREGARD MY STUPIDITY.

Yes, doing that will unlock the drive. I remember that from when I did mine.

Oh wow, that worked! At least on the virgin system that isn't screwed up. Now I need to stick the SID files on the hard drive. I think I will also copy them to my memory unit so I can mod other Xboxes without having to bother with hotswapping.

OK, so I was able to fix the error 16'd console by using NDure with xboxhdm. Now it has some UnleashX menu, but it has the same problem the original softmod did - there is no original (stock) dashboard at all, if you try to launch it, it says the file doesn't exist.

Do you guys know where to get the files so I can remake the hard drive using xboxhdm, but have it be a stock un-hacked dashboard? Now that I've got the SID save file on my memory card, I can just pop in the Splinter Cell disc and install my own copy of XBMC from scratch.

Why would you ever want a stock dashboard on the original xbox? The only benefit for one was for xbox live and that is no more. It looks like you have things working to the point of FTP being an option (if you have unleashx you have FTP which does it all). If you need simplicity for some reason then most should feature a measure of autoplay. Slayer's disc should have such things though and I am not sure but Autoinstaller deluxe might have something (you want a copy of autoinstaller deluxe anyway so no harm in having a copy).

Blah. 3 of my NSO + Expansion Pass family group members are leaving. Found one replacement so far but still need to fill two empty slots. I have 9 days or i eat the extra cost myself. But with a full group $11 for a year is a good deal. imo
