I really wish I can get region free option. I want to play some games like Kid Icarus Uprising but I don't like English dub. I want to play games always in original language (in this case japanese). I don't want any hack for 3DS for ilegal roms or something like that. I want to play original 3DS game from japan. I see no reason why would I not have right to do it. Nintendo really dissapointed me with Region lock. 3DS is even region free with DS games. That leds me to belive that cartigdes of 3DS games are locked themself. How come nobody found way to break code by modifying cartridges? I am just asking will it ever be possible to put original Japanese cartridge in PAL 3DS and play it. Could a firmware update help it? Like some modification so it has all 3 home menus so cartridge from other region recognise one of those 3 and boot because I heared that cartridges work on that method (recognising home menu)
Region free option would REALLY boost sales and I would really like it. If its not gonna happen by Nintendo, what are chances hackers do it? Like I said, I don't want piracy. I just want to be able to play Japanese games on PAL console. Only reason why I jtagged XBOX 360 was to play Japanese games as well. Please somebody answer me so I can know some details. Thanks

There are people working on it and making progress, but there is still so much to do before a hack is released. It will be many months or even a year or two, so be patient and keep checking back here occasionally for the front-page headlines.

@nextpost -- that's probably a better solution than waiting almost forever for a maybe-hack

well... I really have nothing to say then. I know it region blocks suck, I know buying another console sucks, I know potentially losing all your games sucks, I know waiting sucks. What more does he want? He could have answered his one and only question without this rant formula by reading this sticky.

Thanks for all great suggestions guys. I think I will be patient and wait for hack because thats the best for me since i cant afford 2 consoles and selling games and eu console is not good because some 3DS games like skylanders are not and never will be released in japan.

How come nobody found way to break code by modifying cartridges?

i'm not familiar with the specifics on the 3ds, but i would imagine that the games are stored on a write once memory source, aka you can't change anything on the carts themselves.

additionally, even if you could write to the cart, i would be shocked if the region locking worked differently than the xbox360 (a system i am familiar with) in that the games region information is stored in a signed executable file. this means that if you change the region on that file, the digital signature would be broken (and once that happens, there is nothing you can really do to resign it without the keys, which we will realistically never have while they would still be remotely useful). once the signature is broken, the console won't run that file anymore.

I am just asking will it ever be possible to put original Japanese cartridge in PAL 3DS and play it. Could a firmware update help it?

someday, i'm sure this will be possible. as soon as we have the ability to run unsigned code, i'm sure region free will happen at the same time. you might not be looking for piracy, but that and region free come in a single package. both will become available at the same time.

I do know that piracy and region free always sadly come in same package. I have RGH Xbox 360, Softmodded Wii, chipped PS2, Softmodded original Xbox and even CFW PSP (to use remotejoy). I however would absolutly NOT pirate my games. I want to pay for something that is good and that developers worked hard on. I will wait for hack and hack my 3DS to run unsigned code. Also will that hack block R4 card (i use it for free homebrew)? Just asking. If it does block, i wouldnt care that much because Region Free 3DS is more important to me. I also hope screen recording will be possible with software like on CFW PSP.

anything people can offer you is going to be speculation, but a hack would NEVER block a flashcard. you have much more reason to worry about nintendo blocking your r4 through an official firmware update (which will eventually become a mandatory update to play newer games).

regardless, once you can run unsigned code on the system itself in 3ds mode, you won't need the r4 anymore because you will be able to get newer better homebrew that is able to use the 3ds to its full capacity instead of the sandboxed ds mode. the current expectation is that the hack will let you store data on an sd card, so you won't need any type of dedicated r4-like device if that's the case.

But when 3DS gets ability to run unsigned code, how will I still be able do update 3DS? wouldn't that remove hack? For example on PS3 and PSP if you update through sony's fimrware, the hack gets removed. And yeah, you have a point about homebrew. Also I was wondering, do dev kit 3DS consoles exist? If they do, are they region free? Althrough they would be really expensive and almost impossible to get hands on

the same way you update any other console, you wait to update until a new hack has been released, or you trick games into thinking you have the newest update by patch or other mechanisms.

there is no reason to think the 3ds will be any different from any other modern console

and yes, dev kits do exist for a 3ds, they exist for every system. that's what developers use in the game making process. no idea if they are region free or how available/expensive they are, but it may be a moot point as it is pretty common for dev kits to not be able to play retail games
