Ok so last night i decided to purchase a game on the wiiu , we decided on Tekken for a some kick ass family brawling , so after seeing the price and thinking fukk if i waited i could own this for 20 quid from amazon , decided ah sod it just buy it from the eshop. Only to be confronted with the you need to make some space as you need 16gigs free for tekken , OMFG 16 gigs REALLY ??? after deleting 4 demos i managed to make the space . At that moment decided that if i wanted more eshop titles im kinda fukked ( i know i can have Stand alone HDD's but i dont wanna) . So we ended up not buying and ordering the disc . And have also decided to leave the inbuilt wiiu storage for the smaller indie titles and demos.

Question is really , is Tekken as an example of main titles really 16gigs in size on the disc , or am i downloading an image here ... ??

yup WiiU games are large indeed

the idea is to have a decent size external for the main titles
specially with them planning some big titles that require update when playing online with alot of people
DragonQuest is a good example of this

So basically , to keep costs down they opted for a tiny 32 gigs internal and a usb port. I was naively under the impression that my 32 gig premium console would be enough to house at least 3 or 4 main games...

It depends what games you download. Nintendoland and NSMBU are both under 4GB.
And if you really want to start downloading game from the eshop, you need to get an external HDD

well on the disk the blank files fill the rest of the disk up but on downloads idk why add that
As far as I know files are not padded if you download the games from the shop, that would be retarded. Besides, in that case every game would be 25GB.

right but then why is the 360 version 8.14GB and the wii u with slightly more features be twice the size
Maybe it has bigger textures? It does have a bunch of additional skins, and those coupled with higher res images can quickly lead to a very large size difference. Still, I doubt Nintendo is THAT retarded. And like the guy above you said, Nintendoland and NSMBU are under 4GB, so it's certainly not padding to disk size or something, otherwise all eshop games would be the same size.

Yup, games are big and getting bigger. At the price of terrabyte drives it is a simple fix. I got a one terrabyte drive from Amazon for a mere $49 bucks. Well worth it.

After system files have downloaded you only get 25GB space left on a Premium console, this is normal with most modern devices that play games. Technically it is possible to get four retail games on there, games like NSMBU and other small games like it and of course a fair number of eShop indie titles. This is a reason to why I'll just grab a basic, purchasing a 1TB HDD doesn't cost that much nowadays, I picked up one for £45 a couple of weeks ago.

The largest Wii U game at the moment is LEGO City Undercover at 22GB.

I don't know why gamers are getting butthurt over game sizes, it's been like this for a while now for PC/PS3 titles. Welcome to the nextcurrent generation.

Or it's just that it's a port. Bloated game sizes are quite common with ports, also this wouldn't be Nintendo's doing it would be Namco or whoever developed the port, they may have not had enough time to trim things down for the port what with needing it to make launch.

this thread made me wonder: what if my external hdd broke? I would have to re-download only or buy the games again?
I am somewhat scared by the perspective of trying to convince Nintendo that something happened with my hdd and I have already paid for those games etc.

Just redownload them. Despite accounts currently being limited to logging in to a single console, eShop purchases are tied to the account --- not the hardware.

If your HDD dies, replace it and redownload the files. If your Wii U breaks, send it in to get it repaired --- and have the account transferred if it needs to be replaced.

Would I be able to use the same HDD that contains all my wii and gamecube backups?

Unfortunately no. The Wii U has to format the HDD in order to be able to store games on to it.

I suggest making a backup for your HDD before you go down that avenue.
