I don't know about you but there are many darker games such as RE etc where sometimes the top screen displays a dark, moody scene. The developers, in their infinite wisdom, also are displaying this nova-bright bottom screen for a map etc which is not needed. It is so bad that it actually is distracting from what is going on on top (play something like RE or OoT and cover the bottom screen, the top looks much better).

Has anyone done or heard of modding the 3DS XL lower screen by putting a dimmer pot in it to allow you to manually adjust only the lower screen brightness? A nice dimmer wheel for the lower screen would be really nice to have. I thought of just taking it apart and doing it but was told that you can't just throw in a pot, there is probably some kind of voltage regulator that would try to compensate for the pot and not work right. This regulator would need to be modded.

Are there any electronics hackers around here that could do this?

I actually could follow what you were saying. My guess is that nothing is ever easy, especially if the circuit board isnt designed for it lol However it would be nice to have a hard switch for brighness like the PSP. Having to adjust (both) screens (simultaneously) is kinda a pain though.

I never really change the brightness of the top screen though so I would mostly just adjust the bottom as needed.

This would be really nice to have.

It would probably be a lot easier to develop a method of covering the bottom screen. Some black card and tape would be the simplest and ultra budget solution.
