I have to admit: when I read "Ive never play final", my first reaction was "what? Never played final fight?".

If you ask me, most beat 'em ups are more fun than a traditional turn-based final fantasy game.

I gotta admit I'm replaying mystic quest on the gameboy, though (that's final fantasy adventure for you US-ians). It's a bit dated and monster AI is pathetic, but it's nonetheless quite fun to play. And the story is pretty decent as well. Sound...erm...for an original gameboy game it's pretty good.

(note: I just read there's a remake of it on the GBA. Perhaps that's the better title to pick).

Final Fantasy 3 (US) is the same as Final Fantasy 6 (JPN) on the SNES. Originally Square didn't bring the actual 2 and 3 to the US, so when they wanted to bring 4 they called it 2, then they skilled five as well so when they wanted to bring 6, it was only the third in the US...

Thankfully after 7 they fixed it, and the ports and re-releases use the fixed numbers. But the original SNES ones people are talking about used 2/3 instead of 4/6.

Play Crisis Core. It totally doesn't have shit everything.

ftfy

EDIT: But the first nine Final Fantasy games are on sale on the PSN if you're really interested and have a PSP/Vita (they only have the PSP versions of FFI and II and IV) but really the only game you should buy is the amazing Dissidia 012.

Since when does FF require grinding?
Final Fantasy is one of the easiest series out there.

Final Fantasy VI and IX are both my favorite. After that I it's III + IV + VII, in no specefic order.

Skip 1-2 Play the remake of 3, skip 4 but read the story on wikipedia, skip 5. PLAY 6-10, skip 10-2 and 11, play 12, skip 13, play 13-2.

Yo dawg, Kingdom Hearts is the best Final Fantasy game EVAR!

That's because Final Fantasy sucks now. Hell, Lost Odyssey was a better Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy IX. Square just lost all touch with the genre and franchise. If games like Lost Odyssey and Ni No Kuni can do everything so right while still being a traditional JRPG, then there's no excuse why Square, who has worked on FF since the 80's can't come out with a good FF game.

The only reason I can think of Square not being good now, is all the talent left the company.

I'm curious whats wrong with 1, 2, 4 and 5?

(Bare in mind that this all my own opinion but here goes)

1-2 are too dated and dont have very good stories
4 has way too much grinding in both the original and the remake and the remake has way too much missable stuff and isnt very fun to play without a guide. Good story tho.
5 has a very weak story and probably the worst cast of characters in any of the games. Altho the job system is cool, it isnt enough to save it. (original only, havent played remake)

I think for someone who hasnt played any of the games, these are the ones i would skip. The other games all have enough to keep a non-fan interested because of the story or gameplay elements. I think you have to remember that all of these games are easily 30 hour+ games and i dont think its worth playing any of the ones i mentioned, simply because there isnt anything that memorable about them (aside from possibly 4's story) The rest of the games will make you feel you accomplished something and you will most deff remember some aspect of them.

Personally if i was going to start final fantasy over again, i would start at 6 and go up to 10 and stop. Those for me are the golden era of final fantasy.

I agree that ones below 4 are too dated.

If he's going to play 4, it should be one of the recent remakes, like the DS one.

Yeah 5 has almost zero character development (it has like one cutscene for each character), but the whole world story is interesting.

6 is where it gets a nice blend of development everywhere. 7 is 7, 8 is nice but doesn't fit the tastes of many. Haven't played 9+ yet.

I have to disagree with you in this one. You just have to look at the FFV story introduction to see that they cared very much for the story in this game. (imho FFV story introduction is much better than FFVI introduction, I don't know FFV introduction kind of deal with your emotions right in the beginning of the game...)

I agree, FFVI is a great title, it broke many cliches in the FF franchise and have many merits! But I feel people discredit older titles too much because of that, it doesn't mean they don't have any credit.

Do you have a list of these glitches?
I've heard about gameplay glitches on the GBA versions, but I've never heard of the graphical and audio glitches.

Mode 7 effects run as slow as hell (3D effects are slow when riding a Chocobo and Airship), the audio quality isn't nearly as good as the Snes version, but that's not a glitch but a limitation of the GBA hardware. Battles slow down when powerful spells are cast and don't run at 60 fps. Not to mention the colors were oversaturated to compensate for the dark screen

ROM hackers fixed that though http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=12772.0

The sound was pretty weak in comparison http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/657/
