Download the firmware (Kernel) from the website printed on the cart, put everything from the download on to the microSD.

The R4i Gold 3DS should run Wood R4, which you can get from the official site

To install, just extract the file named "_DS_MENU.DAT" and folder named "__rpg" right into the root of your MicroSD card and that's it. The roms can go anywhere, normally I put them in a folder named "NDS"

Yes.
The root is literally the first window when you open the microSD card, once you reformat it, it should have nothing in it.

I should of mentioned in my previous post, the firmware (Kernel) download will be a compressed file so you will need Winrar to extract it.

You can't but it's always suggested to reformat it.
Also I suggest not using the Windows Formatter. I would suggest using this program

With these setting
FORMAT TYPE : FULL (OverWrite)FORMAT SIZE ADJUSTMENT : ON

You get better results doing it that way.

does class matter for the MircoSD card? like Class 2, 4, 8?

That explains the class issue, and you can use the moonshell homebrew to play music and videos, but video support is very limited and sort of crappy even then.
