Just got that in my inbox today, looks like MSN's started sending out the warning emails ~two months ahead of time. It might seem a little early, but MSN's been going for years, so I guess this is to give people enough time for it to sink in... and for users to realize this isn't one of the many fake "service stop" e-mails and messages that have made the rounds.

I've gotten a couple of these over the past week. I forgot I ever had this thing...? Musta used it back in '07 or '06 or something. Then I jumped on to Pidgin for the longest time :P

I have a total of 2 friends that frequently use Live Messenger. Getting them to switch to another service is pretty darn sweet since I can dump Live Messenger.

I used it in the past, but now I just use my phone and facebook for communication.
Use to customize it and all too.

To make sure I understand, they are merging MSN into Skype and still keeping the name Skype?

I WOULD celebrate about people finally going to a messenger that has native support for formatting anything other than an entire message at once... but lots of people are just going to go to skype anyways since it has all the contacts, and skype doesn't do it either...
While people are most likely going to end up using Skype I doubt all of them will actually merge their accounts. I know for a fact that I refuse to merge my accounts because that would give me a shitload of old contacts that I never talk to anymore.

I just went for it.
after merging: your msn account still works as normal for now, and if you log into skype with your skype account it still works as normal your msn contacts do not show up, you have to log into your msn account using skype to use them both at once; which is good because I'd like to keep them separate for as long as possible.

Oh, it's optional? I assumed from the paragraph of the e-mail that I read (yeah I stopped there) that Microsoft had already imported them anyways (or would do so upon first login with the right credentials).

it had to go down because people can't just take chat as the actually good feature. msn video conferencing was not very impressive and it was quite slow too. you could play games and share photos but skype CAN ALSO share screens. It is not efficient to work on two programs doing the same thing.

I wonder how this will play out, I am certainly not opposed to the streamlining of services but this has the potential to be a rocky process.

In other news skype has been slowly getting worse for me and mine so I am looking for a replacement. A pity that teamviewer is not quite the chat program it could be as I quite like the VOIP and video options there.

I remember getting fake messages like this all the time when I used to use MSN, it seems kind of weird to see one that is actually legitimate. I use Skype, but the version for Linux isn't really up to the same standards as the version for Windows.

I'm still connected to MSN 7 (the last version visually acceptable for me).
The version which was still a standalone software "install the files in the folder, use it!", with removed advertisment and popups. It's a very minimalist version just to see who is online.
No need to install 40 programs to integrate to windows just to chat to a friend.

I hope they won't transform skype into a Live-like application which require 40 microsoft mandatory applications to be installed, polluting your private space with advertisements everywhere.

The new skype doesn't look appealing to me, I'm still using an old one.
Can't they understand that users only want to have a little list with names? that's all.
