As these types are called nowadays. I have the GBA and DS Castlevanias and Metroids, and love them dearly. Also really enjoyed 'Monster Tale', and some of the DS Spider-Mans have been OK. I'd like to know about ANY and ALL of these games, please - ones with the open-ended, 'acquire new ability to reach new area' format. I'd prefer them to be 2D, but I'm open-minded.

Thanks! :)

you might like the megaman zero games

Really? They are Metroidvanias? (I have a few of those for GBA...bought 'em and tossed 'em in a drawer...huh...)

As for SOTN, this is a GIVEN; (sorry, but, duh! ;)) SOTN is high among my fav games of all time, its the first game I DEMANDED back when I had my first PSP modded, two years ago.

Haha, you just said DS and GBA games so I wasn't sure if you already played it. That said, try Hero Core on the PC. It's free and pretty fun. I'm too lazy to look for a DL link though. Also, Cave Story is not exactly a Metroidvania, but it does have some optional stuff that can lead to a different end and it has similarities to one. It's free or there's an improved paid version called Cave Story+.

Cave Story is considered one, though there's not much open exploration as which area you go to is generally set in order... anyways the original version for the PC is freeware (and has a DSi and PSP port), it's got an updated version called Cave Story+ for the PC (updated graphics, new areas, etc.), it's got the remake on the 3DS, etc.

An Untitled Story is a good one that fits the whole "explore with your new abilities" thing, Windows.

Excluding all Metroids and Castlevania games (I suppose you already suspect them to be "metroidvania" ;) )

Xbox 360 (XBLA) : Shadow Complex. I liked it a lot, it's a modern looking game (a couple accidentally infiltrating a military-like complex)
Wii (WiiWare): La Mulana (I'm currently playing it. Very hard on WiiWare, but a very good one if you like free exploration), Cave Story, Lost Winds (Veeeery short and easy, good game but linear, not based on free exploration)
DS: Scurge: Hive (not 2D/plateform, more 3D Isometric), Knytt Stories (Homebrew. I never played it yet)
NES: Faxanadu (old, but good!)

And, just check some website: (I googled Metroidvania)
http://www.vgmuseum.com They are listing some games which I don't consider MetroidVania, they are more like "looking for items in a big world"

Awesome - THANKS, guys! (and girls) :)

As for Cave Story, very curious....

Also, I should have specified; I'm looking for Metroidvanias that I can play via PSP/DS w/AceKard. (We have tons of console stuff, but I cant stand being tethered these days....hand-helds, for me.)

I don't know any on PSP (except "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" port).

Good on the 'Scurge', btw....right up my alley. (Got my ass kicked, but I'm having another go at it, heh.)

Rydian, where can I obtain/see the Cave Story for DS?

Yeah, sucks badly that I havent got access to Cave Story, Shantae, (sp?) etc. I saw a review for a game in Nintendo Power that is supposed to be a great Castlevania rip-off...."Dark Castle" something or other.

Because I dont do the 'points'/on-line purchase programs, I miss-out on all of these.

There's a free homebrew Cave Story for the PSP.

Demons Crest - Super Nintendo.
One of the HIDDEN gems fitting the "Metroidvania" genre perfectly.
Also Phantom 2040 for SNES is worth checking out.

I suppose Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap on the Sega Master System (Dragon's Curse on the TurboGrafx-16) could loosely be considered this type of game. It's bloody good too.

Great game, for sure. Dragon's Trap was among the first few Genny/MD carts that I had, in the beginning...Alex Kidd, Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle, Altered Beast, etc... B-)
