Hacking Gamecube to Classic Controller Converter 2 questions

Ok, so I'm going to say that Gamecube is possible but after looking into PS2, I don't know there. First of all, it's ugly. Second of all, the analog control for the PS2 triggers isn't going to match nicely with the CC and GC anyway, in a physical sense. The CC and GC both have quite long "trigger pulls" for their analog, whereas the pull on the PS2 triggers are almost nonexistant (which is why they call it pressure sensitive). So I will definitely put the effort in to try to add GC analog triggers, but I probably won't even bother with them on PS2.

Hell yeah! We're gonna have our Project: Melee on WiiU really soon!
 
Just curious, but if I build these to sell, are people going to be more interested in DIY mod kits or pre-modded controllers? If you just want an external adapter, just buy the Wii Retropad Adapters from the original guy's site (just hold off until I add analog trigger support and ask him to reprogram it before you buy).

I wouldn't worry about PS2, it's all about Nintendo in this thread :)

I can see the benefit of the external adapter since I could use the wavebird, but then again who needs it if I have a pre-modded GC controller. So my vote would be pre-modded 1st party controllers. Now I am assuming rumble will not make the transfer since there is no rumble for the classic controller? Which is fine since I'm used to no rumbling on my Wavebird anyway, I was just curious.
 
Yeah, no rumble. Wavebird would be kinda ridiculous, wireless GC controller to reciever, to wired connection to wireless Wiimote :P Just curious, but has anybody tried the WiiU Pro controllers in Wii mode? That might be an option for a true wireless solution if it works in Wii mode...

Might need one of these. Need a gamecube controller for SSB4 when it comes out. Just doesn't feel right without it.

The guy who originally built this already sells external adapters, and I'm not going to steal his sales there. http://faiscaefumaca.com.br/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=53 (you'll also need the adapter cable for whichever controller you want to use). I'm only going to sell internal mods. The hardware and software are open source, but I'm not going to steal sales on the *exact* board that he sells... The only thing is that his adapters won't have my analog trigger fix unless he merges my patch and flashes the updated code before shipping. So hold off until I get the cables so I can test my patch, and I'll submit it to him as soon as I have results.

Speaking of testing, can somebody point me towards a game or homebrew that uses the CC analog triggers so I can tell if they're working? Even better would be homebrew that displays raw input values. I could code one up myself, but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel.
 
I think I saw an input test app on WiiBrew a few years back, but I just had a look and couldn't find anything. If I see anything I'll drop it in the thread though.

I have two of these http://r.ebay.com/NQmk68 lying around which I've never actually used (About to test on Wii U with Brawl now) and this is simplicity at its finest if you ask me.

I did look around for a PS2-GC adapter so I could daisy-chain this together and use a GC pad acting as a PS2 pad acting as a Classic Controller. Which in theory should work. But I can't find anything.

One issue with the guys RetroPad adapter is that they're all sold out lol.
Definitely would be worthwhile contacting him and seeing if you can collaborate together on a project to get this done. The main goal here is to get a GC controller to act as a Classic Controller which would probably sell quite well during the next Smash Bros. release for the hardcore players.
 
If you can solder and program an AVR, you can build one yourself. The design files are online (I think you can even order circuit boards from BatchPCB). It's just one through-hole IC, 1 resistor, and 1 capacitor. The adapter cable is a bit more involved, seeing as you have to cut apart a cable and then wire it up to a DB9 connector.

I don't know if his stuff lags and that is seriously a whole new box and 2 wires to make a controller work, I was thinking more along the lines of something that that hung on to the bottom of a Wii Remote that would let me plug a Gamecube controller in.

In any case, I got my hands on a wiimote raw data logging app, so I'll be able to test the GC triggers as soon as I get a cable to hook it up.

My biggest problem: I have never made an electronic before and I really don't want to start trying with something so expensive.

I'd purchase one if you're able to make it. Heck, depending on the price and if you are able to, I can grab an entire community for the same reason this topic was created and bombard you with orders lol. The ability to detect the pressure inputs accurately of the analog buttons are a must though. Keep me updated. I may forget about this topic so PM me if any breakthroughs happen.

Edit: there may be some games that can detect the pressured analog inputs, but doesn't respond with a visual cue. If I remember correctly, Mario Kart Wii and Tatsunoko vs Capcom are some examples of it. Not 100% sure though.

Best way to find out is to download Dolphin (Gamecube/Wii emulator) and Super Smash Bros Melee (Melee for Gamecube, not Brawl). Connect your wiimote to the computer somehow with your GC connected to your wiimote. In Melee, we have varying sheild sizes (when holding R or L) depending on how heavy your input is. The lighter your input, the bigger the sheild and vice versa.

So I tested some Wii games on a Wii and the soft presses on the shoulder buttons get picked up at varying degrees of soft presses MEANING the Classic Controller has the capacity to detect differences in soft presses which is great for this converter/Project:M/if we one day get GCN games working on WiiU.
 
Yeah, the Classic Controller definitely supports the analog "half-pressed" trigger states. I have a homebrew app that displays the raw input values, so I no longer need a game to test with. I can say with 99% certainty that I can make the analog triggers work properly, I only need to wait for the cables to get here so I can make sure that I'm sending the right analog ranges.


That's basically exactly what I would be selling, except the wiring will be WAAAY nicer ;)

The only limiting factor to me selling these is getting my hands on controllers in decent shape. Ebay is the best source of supply, but it's always a gamble on what shape it's in. The only real way to get my hands on new controllers is to go 3rd party, and I don't want to do that.

What if we provided donor controllers? I've got a couple wired GC controllers and I wouldn't mind sacrificing one for the cause. Plus if we provide donor controllers wouldn't that make your life easier and keep costs down?

He said with enough demand he was gonna make a converter that wasn't huge.
 
I would definitely be willing to mod somebody's controller if they sent it to me, and I would do it for a lower price, though I would have to figure out my price points before I settle on anything. Also, I'm still not really willing to build and sell external adapters. My boards will be as small as I can get them, and I'll be selling boards by themselves. As I said, you can turn that into an external adapter if you want, but I *probably* wont sell them that way. That may change, I don't know. We'll see.

Oh.. you're going to internally modify the controllers? I rather not have it like that. I thought it was gonna be on the lines of:

[Gamecube Controller] -----> [GC to Wiimote adaptor - the product you were making] ------> [Wiimote]

Is this possible instead? Smash is one of the few games where there are many players that can't use another player's controller due to differences in sensitivity (talking about high level players). Brand new controllers have to be "broken in" (basically hours upon hours of using the controller) in order to achieve a good sensitive range to play Super Smash Bros. I know the smash bros community would love the fact that it can detect the pressure analog inputs, but I don't think a majority of them want their controllers modded only to use for the wiimote specifically.

Another issue is: Will this lag? Laggy inputs is a big no-no as well especially since Smash is a very timing-strict game if you're playing at a competitive level.
