Would this work in the UK?

Hi guys.

I know approximately dick all about mobile phone technology, but I saw this and I thought I might invest. It's hardly cutting edge technology, but my current phone is a Motorola Razr V3, the crappy model, not even the V3i with the MicroSD slot and the better camera. So anything's a step in the right direction. I'm sick of always forgetting my phone so if it's attached to me, I might be able to work through that issue :)

So, check out this eBay listing, and answer the following questions for me please.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150920948132?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

1) It says GSM only, what the smegola does that mean?

2) Will it work here in the UK with my current 02 sim? It does say unlocked.

3) What do you guys think to the quality? I saw one in development which I'd KILL for, it's a wrist mounted MP3 player which charges off your pulse, but this does more, and it's...well, it's out now, that's a big point in its favour.

4) Anyone know of any better deals?

Cheers guys :)

If you want a reliable phone stay away from nameless Chinese gimmicky knockoffs/novelties, they will invariably suffer from some sort of issue down the road and when they do you are stuck with no support or any type of warranty to rely on. This would be ok as a novelty type phone but no way would I have one as my main phone. Having tried a few phones from DX and other similar places over the years I would never touch another one again, not even as a back up phone. You can pick up a half decent android phone on pay and go for as little as £70 these days, I would go with that any day over this.

Get a (not overly recent) Nokia. :P

Never had any luck with Nokias. Can't stand them, and since every one of them I've ever encountered has broken, I suspect the feeling's mutual.

I had an Android phone, a Samsung Galaxy S. The firmware went to shit, there were no upgrades available because the S2 was out, and it was damn near unusable. I don't use the apps so I don't really need the latest tech. I'm mostly wanting this for the novelty. It can't be any worse in terms of reliability than my current phone. The damn thing's a pile of crap.

Can your current phone make calls reliably with decent clarity, maintain a decent signal and hold a charge for more than a few hours on standby? If it does chances are it trumps a £50 Chinese cell phone watch. :)

If you insist on buying it, technically there is nothing stopping it working here

Quadband GSM850/900/1800/1900MHz

We use 900/1800. Unlocked so will take any sim..

Usually if you see 007 like gadgets for dirt cheap then you can bet your arse that it'll break sooner or later.

You might be lucky with it and it'll hold a year or 2 but it could also break within 3 days.

1) No. 2) No. 3) No. My phone repeatedly cuts out, half the time it doesn't even ring, and the battery is so fried that if it actually DOES ring, it'll immediately drain it from 3 bars to 1. So...yeah, this might be limited technology but it beats my current model by a significant margin.

Champion, can keep my 02 sim for a crapload of free texts.

To be fair, I seem to have a lucky streak with things like this. Besides, there's a warranty, so if it DOES break in a few days, I'll send the damn thing back. I always have my Razr to fall back on even though it is as utterly shite as I described above.

To add to what everyone's saying, this doesn't sound like a wise investment.

Besides, a watch phone? Pfft. Shoe phones are where it's at.
Gahars used Shoe Phone.

Well, you guys have certainly been more helpful than my companion Kai. I asked him for his input as the resident technical expert of the group, and his only comment was 'Well, regardless of who's calling you'd be talking to your girlfriend.'

I smacked him in the face.
