Hey GBA temp!

I bought a 3DS XL about a month back and a buddy was telling me about R4 cards and what they can do. I figured I'd bite and give it a shot. Well I went and bought this card with a 32 GB MicroSD and am getting started. Is there a thread I can look at for basic getting started instructions? I looked around, but I wasn't able to really find the step by step instructions I was looking for.

Thanks!

Welcome!

I do not have a R4, so I'm not the best person to help you, but you will find tons of usefull information here: http://gbatemp.net/forum/113-r4-ds/

I suggest you start reading the stickies for general information and I sugest you to avoid any firmware updates too.

Are you trying yo raise your post count? Fool kid...

Well I need to get started. I have tried to install the latest Wood Kernel (1.52), which is supposedly compatible with the DS Firmware 4.4.0-10U I'm not sure I'm doing this part right, but when I get the .zip file extracted onto my SD card I'm not sure it is correct. I guess setting that up is my first question

"R4iGold.cn" from r4ids.cn is strongly recommended as the R4 of choice these days - it's Wood-compatible and gets the fastest updates.

The latest Wood Kernel is actually 1.53, I'm fairly sure it is compatible with your version, I remember hearing a while back that to get a 3DS card to work in a 3DS you have to have like an older version of the software or use an old model of DS (like DS lite) to apply the firmware update to the cart so that the cart can load on a 3DS

Yeah, that's the wood I have, my mistake. I think I have also read what you are talking about, but I can't really find a "guide" to do it. Also, it would be helpful if I could find a few screenshots of what my folder should look like when I have the Kernel installed initially

On the root of your memory card (the first screen you have when you click on it) you should have a file named _rpg and the firmware which should be named something along the lines of _MENU_.DAT and a folder named Games which you should be using to have your games in,

Is that what you have?

Yes that's it exactly. Here's a imgur link when I load up I get an error message on the touchscreen that says "An error has occured. Press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off. Please refer to the operations manual for details."

vampirelord54, please do as the procedures listed below:
1. Updating: It seems that your 3ds xl has been udpated to 3ds 4.4.0-10. You need to update it first of all.
1>Borrow a NDSL, a NDSi or a 3DS whose version is under 4.4.0-10.
2>Download WOOD R4 V1.53 from www.r4ids.cn
3>Download 4.4.0-10 patch from www.r4ids.cn
4>Read readme.txt attached with this patch and do as the procedures listed in it.
5>After updating with success, just download roms to your tf card

That's all.

I followed these directions using a friends DS lite. When I launched the game cartridge, it froze on the loading screen "R4i 3DS Loading"

there are different version of wood
try this one
ftp://r4idsdown:[email protected]/Wood_R4iGold_V1.53b.rar

please note

Wood is a KERNEL, Kernel is what allows Game compatibilty and anti-piracy removal on games
Firmware is what allows your Flashcard to work on higher Firmware of the console

thats off teh R4ids.cn card teams website
heres there download page
http://r4ids.cn/r4i-download-e.html
wood is on it

Well I've been to that site before, but the download isn't working (I am at work but I have full admin rights to this computer and nothing is blocked) This is where I got the one I am currently using: http://www.r4ds.me/d...oad/r4ds.html#1

Is it different?

yes they are very different
only a few cards are offically supported by wood (there are many fakes and moddifed version , they appear to have been stopped by the latest updates to wood tho)
and each have there own specific version

strange how the link doest work
maybe try a different web browser like firefox as that is what i use and it works fine
