The deal is that the default map system was changed to a greatly inferior one, which is the opposite of the word "update".

The default built in one was super gimped in comparison to the web app. In the end it's better this way since now more people will use the better web app. If google wants to build a serious map app for iOS they will.

Well at least they didn't say that we are looking at the maps from the wrong angle/ pointing the phone at the wrong direction/holding it wrong/whatever so yea :P

You should hold on to your ass.

Every map app is still available for use. I still don't understand what's the big deal.

Except for Google Maps, which a good portion of people relied on using.

jesus christ. The web app for google maps still runs on iOS and it is way better than the sad excuse google had built as an app for iOS.

Okay, first of all, opinions. Second, the web app isn't exactly a replacement. It's a web app which means that it's not capable of some key features that many folks are used to. That combined with there being no actual Google Maps app means that running Google Maps isn't really an option for most people. The average user isn't going to go "Oh hey, I have an idea, why don't I go to google maps on my browser, and use their web app?". Not many people will even know it's an option.

The web app is perfectly capable of anything the built in app was capable of doing. What key features exactly are you referring to? The built in map was merely a shell for the web app and it never saw an update since pretty much inception (not the movie). Are you even an iPhone user or are you just assuming the the android google maps work the same as the iOS one?

i shit you not the web app works way better, has more features and you can install it to your home screen and it will work just like any other app.

Web App < Native Application, forever and always. Using an application heavily relying on resources through the browser is like counting grains of sand through kitchen mittens.

Edit: Blasted T9! Typing whatever it wants. >>

Get Google Earth for iOS, problem solved.
Uses Google Maps and has directions.

you just don't get it. if google maps is not the default native app then there are no other options. at least that's what i've learned tonight. you'll have to get mittens and count grains are something.

anyway. i'm done with this topic. you guys have at it.

I am very very surprised that Apple (the CEO himself) actually apologized and even offered alternatives (Ping...).

At least now Apple is trying to fix this. They need to do it fast and right.

Only 'coz people are actually starting to get into accidents because of this. It's like people worship Apple or something and shrug off common sense. But other than the threat of facing actual legal consequences because of the accidents, they probably would have let this one fly and update it when it suits them.

The truth is that the default map app was changed only to cut all ties to Google due to legal issues. The consumer was put on the second place and these are the effects - a poor and rushed application with no chances for a roll-back.

My aunt delivers mail in Florida. Someone using Apple Maps smashed into the back of the mail truck totaling it. Thank God she wasn't inside the truck when it happened.
