With how much it cost to release a patch to block flashcards, it's not worth it in the long run since no one who owns a flashcard will go out and buy DS games.

Actually I know a couple others who have flashcarts yet still go out and buy games. About the only games they download are older ones that are either not in stock around where they live or ones that they'd have to get secondhand anyway. Brand new games are a different matter because they like supporting devs. Over time they may download it but by then they usually have played the physical copy at least once or twice and have long since gotten rid of it.

I buy "3DS" games and at one point half of game library I owed or can't find in the stores around me (lost my DS Lite way back). But this doesn't change the fact that they, like me, are not "actively" buying games.

I didn't say anything about 'actively' buying games as there are many people, with or without flashcarts, who don't actively buy games. I was more referring to your statement that having a flashcart(and thus being able to get DS games free) would mean that said owners wouldn't still go out and buy games. I was saying that I still know people who go out/have gone out and buy/bought DS games despite having flashcarts.

Edit: Cut out a lot of the extra quotes.

I am buying a 3DS XL (Red) tomorrow afternoon (September 21st, 2012), and it better come with firmware 4.3.0-10 (or lower) on it, or I'm going to be pissed that I can't juse my R4i Gold 3DS cart. (Latest patch, shows up as Prince Caspian game)
I'm pretty sure it comes lower than 4.3 since I had to update mine to 4.3 when I got it.

It does. I got mine this past week and it came with 3.1.0-6. So, you should be good. I have mine on 4.3.0-10 so I'm good. I'm trying to get either a Supercard or R4i but it looks like my mind's been made up!

R4iDSN 3DS(www.r4idsn.com) has broken 3DS 4.4.0-10 too.
You can have a look at the video here:
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNDUzOTQ2MTAw.html

The beta patch is under testing and please pay attention to the news released by the official website.
As you know, r4i gold 3ds(www.r4ids.cn) and r4idsn are supported by the same team.
Therefore, r4i gold 3ds can support 3DS 4.4.0-10 too after updating with success.

Someone knows something about this?

"Friendly tips:

The 3DS system update to 4.4.0-10x, official information indicates improved security. We research Immediately and found out that the 3DS system update detect save IC on the PCB.

1. From the current market, most of the cards are without save IC, so be blocked now. Therefore, this is the hardware defect, software can not solve.
2. Part of the card on the market have save IC, but the main control program has been burned to fixed (FPGA program). So user can not solve this problem too, unless return to the factory.

So, 95% of the card in the world will be blocked, you players please note it.

From now on, flash card support 3DS 4.4.0-10x " are DSTWO (released upgrade file already here..) and a xxx r4 (released video only, no upgrade file released).

In addition, I guess a number of factorys will abandon their old card, and make new card, or new brand…"

Someone knows something about this?
Sort of, and up until now the differences only related to ease of updating.

  • The DSTwo and R4i Gold are not read unless they have a MicroSD in them.
Even after putting a MicroSD in the DSTwo, however, it has to be one that has the correct software on it, or you get the DSi/3DS error.
(The R4i Gold can try to boot without the correct MicroSD.)
  • The AK2i, however, can show an icon and try to boot without a MicroSD. The AK2i is using an older design where the boot data is all stored on the AK2i itself.

Normally this just means that the AK2i has a harder time updating since it's not as flexible in the updates it can take (which users have seen, since it can take a month for an update now), while other carts like the R4i Gold and DSTwo can update quicker and easier.

However if the quote is specifically talking about data on the flash cart that in some cases (like the Ak2i) is not rewriteable, then the Ak2i is likely to be permanently stuck at an older firmware.

Now, here's where things get interesting!

The below is info given to me by a different flash cart team (not supercard, I've had no contact with them), back when I was mag staff.

Flashcards can be divided to several classes according to their structure.
Class1: AK2i,Iedge, R4ids Gold(Non-3DS), R4iDSN(Non-3DS), R4I-SDHC, R4I-SDHC(3DS version), DSONEi and etc
Class2: DSTOW, ismmart, iplayer, EZVi, iPlayer, R4ids 3DS , R4iDSN 3DS and etc
Class3: iCyclo

[...]

We can say Class1 may be blocked some day in the future.
Rather foreboding, isn't it? That conversation happened last May.

If both of these pieces of info hold true, then it seems most or all of the carts in the "Class1" list might be unable to run anymore.
