Apple Question about the iOS 6 upgrade

I looked in the settings app and it says the new update for iOS 6 is 530mb on my ipod touch 4g.

If I decide to install this, is this 530mb EXTRA stuff it adds onto my ipod (taking away 530mb from my storage) or 530mb it downloads then overwrites it? (keep the same storage size after update)

I think it's a bit of both, as in it needs that much maximum, and after installation it will take up less than that but still more than the current size.

I'm concerned about downloading it because ios 5.1.1 already uses 1.4gb of my 8gb leaving me only 6.6gb without anything installed. I don't want it to be lower than that because that almost seems like false advertising on apples part. 8gb ipod touch then you open it and its 6.3gb of available storage space...

You could always take the firmware off and have an iBrick.

I apologize for my rudeness there, but anyway, it's not really false advertising. You have to store the firmware somewhere, or the device wouldn't do anything.

Apple isn't advertising 8GB of usable space, just 8GB of flash storage, which it has. Why do you think most storage manufacturers (and Apple) write "actual formatted capacity less"?

Well yea thats true. I wish they actually gave you 8gb though.
Why are the amounts so low anyway though? you can get a 16gb kindle fire for the same price...

It's not extra. It will replace the 5.1.1 firmware entirely, not add on to it.

If you upgrade wirelessly (like how I did), it'll download the system files first. When you install, it will overwrite the previous OS stuff.
