What the NSMB2 game should have been:

Now I know that the original Super Mario Bros. 2 is widely regarded as the worst Mario game, and rightly so. The game itself isnt a home grown Nintendo concept. It was supposed to be a 2 player co-op vertically scrolling platformer called Yumi Doki Doki Panic.

But Nintendo decided that it was too hard to make a polished game. Besides the NES was chugging at all the crap they were throwing at it. So they decided that the game had enough "Mario" components to slap a few token characters into and call it a day. Thus a game that strays pretty far from the original, enough to make you wonder what the guys a N were thinking when they released this.

But Im not here to talk about the original. Im here to speculate what an updated version of this game would look like. The first NSMB for the DS, was roughly based off of Super Mario brothers. So i thought it might be apropriate to see the second one maybe... follow suit. I know alot of you wont agree with me, But i think its still worth thinking about.

1. Super Mario Bros 2 already had 4 playable characters.

Granted you couldnt play them more than one at a time, but they were all there. The Wii version of NSMB had 4... kinda. Mario and Luigi were basically clones of each other, and well so were the Toads. There was no special feeling of being anyone unless you were Mario. The character selection in SMB2 is interesting not only because you can play as peach, but soon afterwards you find she can also float. The game allows for some stragegy to it. This means you actually have to play intelliegently with your friends and work together. Only toad can bump you up there, only peach can float you over there, only mario can run that fast, etc. Especially if you want to find all the secrets. Secrets...

2. Secrets.

Toss a potion and you poof a door into existence. Enter the door, and you end up in a dark, mirrored single non scrolling screen. If you did it right, you usually find a few coins for the slot machine at the end of levels, or a mushroom in increase your HP. In the GBA remake, Nintendo added Yoshi eggs to find in these backstage areas. Imagine looking for coins, treasure, and other goodies in HD? the potion door could be streamlined easiely too. As soon as you toss a potion down, the screen flips into the dark, the screen locks orientation, and you and your buddies could have a few seconds to search for the hidden treasure.

3. Tossing shit.

The entire SMB2 was about picking stuff out of the ground (no matter what it was it had red leaves) and chucking it around. NSMB2 would be pretty hectic and sweet with all this shiz flying everwhere from all the players. Shells, turnips, and anything else really.

4. Enemy Design.
151258-PhantoMainImage.jpg

I mean come on, there aren't many enemies in the original, but the ones that are, are well designed. I for one would LOVE to see Phanto (above) reck people shit. I meant hey were pretty terrifying in the first game, but i really think they can be amped up in a HD release and really run the tables on mario and friends. Wart is basically Bowser, just a frog. He ( and his henchmen, the rat, Birdo, that snake, fireball, and his army of shyguys) to make hell for Bowser or something. I think alot of the SMB2 baddies cast could use a bit more time in the spotlight. Besides, I'm bored with Bowser, hes a loser.

5. When did Mario become a gold greed hog?
New-Super-Mario-Bros-2.jpg

Seriously, who is the greediest character in the Mario universe? Mario? WRONG.
250px-Wario_World_game_cover.jpg

Wario has ALWAYS been the greed icon of Nintendo. I dont understand why they would make Mario the gold coin freak. In every single Wario game, all you do is collect tons and tons of coins. You even get penalized for running into enemies and what do you drop? Your hard earned CASH. Whatever.
Anyways, those are my reasons. I dont expect you all to agree, but i would like to hear your thoughts.

tl;dr: NSMB should have been remade after the orignal SMB2.

ah then we can end up in the age old debate which is really the true Super Mario Bros 2, the US or Japan one. But back on topic, Mario 2 has always been regarded as a black sheep, it has taken quite a chunk of time for Nintendo to even acknowledge parts of Mario 2 into the Mario galaxy (shy guys, birdo, the sta ninja's etc) so I can see why they are somewhat keen to avoid going back to that style of gameplay for mario again

Oh my god, I have so many memories of SMB2. Such an amaaazing game. And Phanto still haunts me in my dreams.

Regarding SMB2, even if it was based off Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, it was still developed by Nintendo. Personally, I think it was still great and stands well in the ranks of Super Mario Bros. 3 and other greats.

To many, SMB2 is regarded as a great game in Mario history. It introduced iconic characters that people love to this day, such as Wart, Shyguy, and Birdo.
But I do agree with you, a 3D version of SMB2 would have astounded me. It'd be a great addition.

It was supposed to be a 2 player co-op vertically scrolling platformer called Yumi Doki Doki Panic.

The game Doki Doki Panic does exist, it was released for the Famicom Disk System in Japan and it is identical to the Super Mario Bros. 2, except for the main characters and some minor details. In Japan Super Mario Bros. 2 is what in the U.S. you call SMB Lost Levels.

I don't think it's a bad idea, but I would rather not having so much recycling. Sure it would be nice to change the formula like SMB2 but not change the formula back to SMB2... One other example I like is Super Mario Land 2, it's a completely non-linear Mario Game (not like SMB3 or SMW where you have a "semi-linear" game), it was not even produced by Miyamoto and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest Mario games. It just showed how much the 2d series could change and evolve, even with a inferior hardware like the gameboy. I wouldn't want Nintendo to make another SML2 but to use the same creativity they once had in their Mario games, when they didn't rely on the old title to make the new ones.

What I still don't get is how we have a playable peach in SMB2, but still, even on NSMB U over 25 years later, we don't. That's just lazy. (I know Miyamoto said her dress was the reason in the Wii version, but that should no longer be an issue with the Wii U)

I have never once heard SMB2 called anything negative. It's a fantastic game, and really changes things up to deliver something a little fresher than the typical Mario game, though not enough to really not feel like one.

Anyway OP is gigantically annoying to read. It's like dark grey on black (dark theme, the master race theme).

I'm not much of a fan of SMB2. It's certainly not awful, but I don't think it's all that worthwhile, either. I'd take SMB or SMB3 any day, but hey, different strokes for different folks.

I was actually sort of toying with an idea like this in my head. Like, not a full copy of Super Mario Bros 2 for NSMB2, but sort of along the lines of "it would be really cool if they would add tons of Super Mario Bros. 2 elements alongside the more 'traditional' Mario elements." Super Mario Bros. 2 was a great game, but I would love even more to see a game that fully incorporates the elements it had along with more classic Mario elements.

I feel as if i'm the only one that liked the US version of smb2.. i thought picking up stuff and tossing it was fun rather than just stomping to kill enemies.. also level designs were great... plus it was the game that introduced classic mario characters, b-bombs, shyguys, birdo, etc. Game doesn't deserve the hate, maybe this is just my nostalgia from playing it on SNES from super mario all-stars at a baby sitters house lol.
