*This is not by me, just from the people from *snip*

On the oh-so-quite 3DS scene, neimod the hacker brings some good news! In the IRC for 3DS hacking, neimod posted that he has successfully dumped and decrypted the 3DS firmware!

He also posted a pastie of the hash checks http://pastie.org/private/jgo0stywtlmeb7vnlgrrcw

This does not mean the 3DS can play ROMS, so don't ask. -Twin

A member posted this:
[19:12] firmware isn't really decrypted
So some of us talked to him and he said this. No luck guys.
Until confirmation, take this with a grain of salt. -rp

Hmm. Could be true. I'd rather wait until neimod makes an official announcement or at least something other than "Yeah neimod totally said he decrypted dat firmware"

neimod said it = Real.

He has genuine RAM dumping hardware and software and if anyone's going to find out the inner workings of that device, it's neimod. Question is - will he share this knowledge with other hackers? He's a little bit of a show-off from what I've read about him and obviously he doesn't support piracy. He's no idiot and knows what his findings would eventually lead to, and as a person who does it for sport, he might be reluctant to share the know-how with others.

It sounds like his writing, awesome. If we get a dump I would be so happy to see how the 3DS file system is made up.

It's Neimod, it's obviously legit.
I'd rather see a screenshot of the irc chat than just text, though.

[12:30] GOD DAMN I LOVE LITTLE BOYS SO MUCH.

I don't doubt it, but I'd feel more...secure about it if there was like...a confirmation or something.

If neimod did indeed said this, and encrypted the firmware, news will spread, and proof positive will be released. If not, no doubt neimod will debunk this to keep his name from being dragged in the mud.

I am willing to wager that he said something along those lines anyways, Supergamr232. In fact, I'll bet it was slightly more explicit.
Well...it included a censored word or two in there so I had to tone it down a little...y'know, for the kids.

Lol but yeah, what Twin just said. If it's real someone will confirm it, if not neimod will say otherwise.

Would be cool if it is though. Might make me buy another 3DS if it is.

Oh and totally BOSS GANSTA avatar, mate.
I really don't know why kids these days still stand in-front of a mirror to take a picture of themselves. Timed shutters have been around for ages and phones have front-facing cameras nowadays. :P

But that's off-topic - I'd like to see a confirmation of this myself, but if it is indeed confirmed by yours truly neimod, I'll be quite excited.

So, what does these findings mean exactly?
It means that the firmware is decrypted - no longer encrypted and can be browsed through on a PC rather than section-by-section by analyzing the contents of RAM. It can be decompiled to an extent - you can look at the all the clockwork that put the 3DS in-motion rather than just selected cogs.

In 20 years our children will all be asking, "Why do all of your photos have weird filters and everyone stands in front of a mirror? And what on earth is that dinosaur of technology your holding in your hand?"
Yeah anyways. I dont buy any of it.

Very interesting if it's true. I'm excited to see what can become of this potential finding! :yaynds:
