How to play your GameCube games from SD or USB using DIOS-MIOS (Lite)

Clarification:
DML ONLY works from SD Card/SDHC Card, nothing else, no USB. There won't be a USB version someday.
So Yeah, this "Clarification" is incorrect, crediar was able to do it :D

What you'll need:
  • IF YOU WANT TO PLAY FROM SD
  • The Latest DIOS-MIOS (Lite) package from here (older versions here).
  • DML WAD Creator (for older versions)
  • IF YOU WANT TO PLAY FROM USB
  • FOR DML and DIOS-MIOS
  • GameCube ISO Compress, fstfix, DiscEX or GCReEX (your choice, read below first and decide what you want to use)
  • A WAD Manager (for example WAD Manager 1.7)
  • A SD Card or a USB Device (D'OH!)
  • Gamecube Controller and Memory Card
How to:
  1. If you have downloaded the newer version go to step 6, if you picked the older ones follow this.
  2. Extract the DML package in a folder with the same name as the package (for example DMLr13 for DMLr13.zip). If there is just a iosmodule.elf of the latest DML available then copy it into a new DML folder and rename it to DML.elf.
  3. If you already have a RVL-mios-v10.wad, copy it into the DML folder. Then the creator don't need to download the file.
  4. Extract the DML WAD Creator into the DML folder. Then run the "create_wad.bat" and type "DML" to create the DML wad, if you don't have the RVL-mios-v10.wad it will be downloaded.
  5. If the DML WAD Creator asks you which version you want to build type it in like '13' for DMLr13.
  6. Now let's convert some gamecube games! If you downloaded the new DML versions or DIOS-MIOS just start reading here.
  7. You'll need the gamecube games in iso or gcm format.
  8. If you want to use DiscEX and downloaded the older DML versions, the DiscEX files needs to be in the same folder as the DML WAD creator. Just open the WAD Creator, type "C" to enter the convert menu, drag and drop the game into it and say if you want to compress it or not. If you use the newer DML versions or DIOS-MIOS, open up a command prompt and enter "DiscEX -c gamename.iso" if you want compression, replace "gamename" with the name of your iso file. If you dont want compression just drag and drop the iso file into the DiscEX.exe. Mostly compression will work fine, some games need to stay uncompressed, see here.
  9. You can also use Gamecube ISO Compressor for the job, easiest way is there to just drag and drop your ISO file into the Compressor exe file. You can also just double click the exe file to see which options you can also use to compress the ISO files, they are more modes in it.
  10. If you have downloaded the new DML versions, you can also use GCReEx, there you can use "GCReEx.exe -x game.iso", this will create no new ISO file but a folder which contains the extracted files, this way saves most space on the sd card.
  11. There is also the possiblity to use fstfix instead to compress the games, use it like "fstfix game.iso" or "fstfix game.iso t" and drag and drop the resulting new iso in DiscEX. DiscEX will may stop at a certain percentage to copy the game, it will may also say the game is underdumped/overdumped. Both things come because the image haven't got the orignal size anymore, so you can ignore these messages.
  12. After using one of the above ways to convert your games, copy the newly created folder of the tool to sd:/games if you want to play from SD and to usb:/games if you want to play from USB.
On your Wii:
  1. Install the DML/DIOS-MIOS WAD with a WAD Manager, this will overwrite the current MIOS/cMIOS. Retail gamecube discs will still work since DMLr19. If you had a cMIOS installed before to play disc backups it wont be possible anymore until you re-install the cMIOS which will overwrite DML.
  2. You can play the games either with DIOS-MIOS Booter, NeoGamma, postLoader4, Wiiflow, USB Loader GX or Configurable USB Loader. Make sure you have a disc inserted, otherwise your Wii will simply reset if you try to play a game.
  3. The easiest one is DIOS-MIOS Booter, it works with all DML and DIOS-MIOS versions, just start it, select the game you want, set new options with the B button if you want, and launch the game.
  4. To boot games using Wiiflow switch the coverflow mode to the gameube coverflow mode by pressing the icon down-right near the home icon a few times until you see the games. You can also download covers for them in the settings, it's the gear icon down-left. Wiiflow also supports all DML and DIOS-MIOS versions with all options.
  5. To boot games using postLoader just press home to enter the menu, select "Switch to Game mode". In game mode just press up on the wiimote to enter the DML menu or press home, select "Game options" and then "Show DML menu". Then select the game you want to play.
  6. For USB Loader GX you just need to go to the display icon and select display gamecube games too, then you can set options in the menu and play them.
  7. In Configurable USB Loader they are just displayed together with the other wii games, there you can also set the options and launch them.
  8. The other ways described now are currently not optimized for the new DML versions, doesnt work with DIOS-MIOS and my not work properly.
  9. To boot games using NeoGamma go down to "Load Games from: " and select "Load GC Games via DML". Then go up and press A to search games. Select the game you want to play and press A to start it. NeoGamma doesnt have options to set for DML because its made for old DML versions.
  10. If you want to remove DML/DIOS-MIOS again either reinstall a cMIOS or the RVL-mios-v10.wad. If DML doesn't work for you make sure you have a clean BC, to get it run the "create_wad.bat" in the DML wad creator package again and type "BC". Then just install the RVL-BC-v6.wad on your wii and try it again.
Recommendations:
  • Format your SD Card to FAT16/FAT32 with 64KB cluster size to increase game speed
  • If you want to use DIOS-MIOS format it to FAT32 with 32KB cluster size, also make the FAT32 the first one, primary and active
  • If you want to use DML r21 I suggest the debug version since the regular version got small problems. Delete the DML.elf, rename the DMLdebug.elf to DML.elf and then create a new wad with it.
  • If you have a problem you can try to rename/delete the "saves" folder on your sd card to everything you want, that can may fix it.
  • Crediar created a small FAQ here that might help you as well with some general questions.
If you want to know game compatility check out the compatility list here:
http://wiki.gbatemp....patibility_List
http://crediar.no-ip.com/gc/
Don't forget to add the games you play to the list if they are missing ;)

That's it! If you have questions just ask here. Have fun playing your gamecube games from SD! :)

so itd just be something like...

root>games>gamedisc1>game.iso
root>games>gamedisc2>game.iso
Actually, this was just put on the CFG thread

mod r37 beta1
=========
Display multi-disc GC games correctly.

EX: usb:\games\GAMEDISK1\game.iso
usb:\games\GAMEDISK2\game.iso

** Still need to manually change filename of "game2.iso"
to "game.iso" after ripping disc2.

http://code.google.c...es/detail?id=48
looks about right.

lol sweet. thanks

Has anyone encountered a non responsive gamecube controller problem? This is just in DML as it still works outside DML.

I've tried the controller outside of DML (both using WiiSX and even through a system menu disc tray boot of the GC disc I'm using [megaman collection]) and it definitely works... but when booting the disc tray game through DML booter, it fails to respond in game.

the game I'm trying to run is Digimon World 4, but I'm not sure that's important considering even the disc tray game doesn't have a responsive controller. I've googled about this and I have only found ONE mention of this kind of problem but it was along with an audio problem and there was absolutely no detail like "audio glitching and no control response"...something like that.

Also when running Digimon, after it loads up the first few logo screens it gives a black screen that never changes, despite the compatability list saying it works (maybe it was someone who only let it run through the title logo's?)

Maybe running an older rev will fix these problems? Also, I've tried using every single compatibly loader besides Wiiflow, debug on and off...nothing changes. To run an older rev do I just install it over the existing .wad?

You would be the fourth person mentioning this problem but the first time I've heard of it with DML (The SD card version) I'd only seen it in DM (The USB version). At least with that version there was hope the next release (v2.0 update 3) would fix it but, apparently, it didn't. If it's the same problem, for some reason Luigi's Mansion was the only one working for those who had the game. If you happen to have it you could always see if it works for you to see if it's a related problem.

yes, it's just a matter of installing one and overwriting the other.

err,, woops...

Ah okay thanks on the rev thing, and the extremely quick reply I've been uninstalling old wad's and reinstalling new ones but I guess I don't have to do all that cool. and do you mean if I have the actual Luigi's mansion disc in the drive, or the backed up iso?

I've tried installing rev58 (since it's the listed working compatible version for Digimon World 4) and it just gives a black screen with no loading of the splash or anything....recompiled it a second ago with the NMM/cheats enabled version and will try it again..

If you want, here's the newest "old" rev. It's r59mod http://www.mediafire.com/?3qhzzbdm8aisab2
Also, I was talking about the backed up ISO but it probably has nothing to do with you since it seems to be just a DM (not L) problem but you could always try.

Well, retried r58 recompiled, but it didnt work..black screen error on boot of iso (when pressing power button on wii it shuts off immediately). But when I run the disc tray game through the DML booter, not only do I get the black screen, I have to hold the power button down to shut it off.

Is this what my folder should look like during compile of the wad? the wording on the guide is kind of confusing, but this seems to make the wad regardless, asyou can see :

Going to try the r59mod wad now...does "Boot Method New/Old" affect this stuff in anyway using these old revisions?

EDIT:

No dice. Nothing below DML 1.5 seems to work for me, and then that one doesn't work completely :/

It would have to be before r52, I think, for it to NEED the "old" boot method.
The way 1.4 and above boot from the disk channel, though, using the old method will make the disk channel just boot the last game you booted from SD until you delete a file from the SD (/games/boot.bin if I remember right.)

EDIT : actually, since you mentioned only 1.5 kinda working, I just looked at the changelog and it looks like in 1.5 they removed boot.bin loading. You might just have a corrupt boot.bin causing problems. Go see if there is one in your /games/ folder and delete it and see if it helps.

THANK YOU!
It seems to work with 1.4b (thanks especially for mentioning that, lol) , or atleast...I also saw a suggestion of putting in the controller AFTER the game has booted, so I did that coupled with 1.4b and the game seems to have worked! Now to try it with NMM on and hope for the best.

I hope 1.4b doesn't have any big bugs I have to worry about

Woops. I just saw the edit, maybe I should delete the boot.bin and retry 1.5?

EDIT: Check out the powers of the forum, I only saw the EDIT: in the quote
EDIT2: No boot.bin in the /games/ folder, but one in the sys folder of the actual game's folder. should I delete that?

Yeah, just like your edit I didn't see until I quoted you. New feature I guess.
Anyway, for me v1.4b worked just fine. I didn't like it because for me it had a bug where the button combinations to restart and power down the Wii wouldn't work.
By all means, the boot.bin thing would be something that would only effect versions BEFORE v1.5 since v1.5 just ignores the presence of the boot.bin file. I was suggesting it as a reason why the older versions might not work.

Good call with the unplugging the control bit. I'll have to tell the other three that had the problem with the USB version and see if it helps them out, too.

Ah, okay. Then I'm just sticking with 1.4b as NMM works with the game here, and I'm not too worried about the reset thing as I have little problem with fully shutting off the system when done at this point anyway, as long as the game works..

This could mean that 1.5 introduces this bug, as I'm not entirely sure the controller thing fixed it really (since I accidentally left it in while booting but ran over to unplug it JUST as the game started...unsure on my timing there), but I'll report back if I find out that's what it really is. Hope it does help someone though, until it's completely fixed.

I saw there was an issue with kirby air ride on the Google code page, for discex, and so far I have yet to get it to work with discex without the -c, or with
GCReEx with and without the -x. I havent tried the other methods, though I heard kirby air ride doesnt work with any form of compression. If someone has it working, anyone mind giving me a tip?

What the Wiki entry means is just that it doesn't work with the -c option on DiscEX but it will work without it. You could just use the WAD creator but tell it not to compress it and it will do the same thing.
I think it will also work with GCReEx -x so you could try it if you wanted to save space but if you're looking to save effort in case it didn't work and you had to delete it, DiscEX without the -c option would be the safest.

Huh... Either way I always end up with a green flash then a black screen after the dios mios screen. I guess my original gcm was bad. Im finding my old one I used to burn to a disc, seeing if that works.

will some one please tell me how to create new topics. As I am new here I have many questions to ask but I cant as can't find how to create a new topic :(
please help me
and sorry for the reply which is not related to the topic

Introduction thread is best place to start. Well, I'm not sure why, but that's what people say.

If your post is "how do I mod my Wii", then introduction is also good place to look. I'm divining that someone will reply and link you to all the good guides, and ask you about yourself (the region of your Wii matters, etc). This DIOS-MIOS guide is a little hard to follow if you don't even know what a modded Wii is. It'd take weeks of understanding for me to get to that point, if I were coming into this blind. It is actually a bit of work, all this modding business, for the computer layman.

I guess he couldn't even post in the introduction forum if he didn't find the button "Start new topic".

to post a new topic:
Go to gbatemp.net
under "forum rule" at the top-left of the page, click on "gbatemp.net" to see all forum's sections.

click on the section you want to post to. (for example, the "Introductions" section").
The you will have a button "Start new topic" at the right of the page, above all the topics already present.

For your information : ALL forums on internet are working like that.

How do i update DIOS MIOS on the Wii? Do always have to download the latest DIOS MIOS and install it on my Wii?

yes, install any version and it will overwrite the previous one.
no need to delete anything before installation, you can only have one MIOS at a time, so installing a new one overwrite the old one.

That's USUALLY true since every other MIOS and cMIOS I've installed uses the same content (content 00 and 01 or 01 and 02. I can't remember exactly) EXCEPT when I installed DM v2.0 update 3a over update 2 I noticed that it uses content 11 and content 12 so it just added to the previous installation instead of replacing it. No matter how many times I reinstalled it, I didn't see any of the promised changes in video mode handling UNTIL I uninstalled it first and THEN reinstalled it. THEN I was finally able to get the correct results. (I'm assuming before it was still loading content 00 and 01 and ignoring the new 11 and 12.)

I'm not sure if that was a typo on Crediar's part when compiling the WAD and I haven't tried the later releases yet but that particular version was the exception to the rule for me.

Hey there
i have been trying to load gamecube games on Configurable USB Loader R20 but it keeps crashing showing me white screen with error codes and returns to the menu in 60 seconds
i installed the latest DIOS V2 and used Gamecube Iso Compress for conversion
What is the cause of this issue ???

P.S I followed the guide properly and checked if anyone had the same issue but I couldnt find
