I've gone back to old games. I've been playing through the titles of my childhood for no discernible reason, not even nostalgia.

My favorite franchise will remain to be Rockman Battle Network til I die.....Because it was the 1st game I legitimately fell in love with and if it wasnt for it then I probably wouldn't be into games as much as I am now.

But more on topic....I dont have a favorite genre per-say....I normally lend toward RPGs and platformers....but I'll play anything fun. As far as if anything has changed in the 10+ years Ive been playing games seriously, I'd say nothing has, but I do like older games better than newer ones that have been coming out. Also, even though this is only because of time I have now versus when I was younger, I do prefer shorter and quicker games though If I find a game enjoyable I'll sit through it despite the time I can allocate to it

When I was a kid...most of the games I liked were games that no one in my class had ever heard of. For example...

• SNES ERA 1 (I was late to the NES era, so I tried with that for a while)
• Me: "Hey, I got this cool game the other day. Want to come play it?"
• Friend: "Yeah! What is it? Final Fantasy? Super Metroid? Super Mario World?"
• Me: "It's called McKids! You help Ronald McDonald get his puzzle pieces back and....hey, wait, where're you going?"
• SNES ERA 2 (Then I got to the SNES and got semi-on track with everyone else)
• Me: "Can you come to my house? I got an awesome game now!"
• Friend: "What game is it?"
• Me: "ClayFighter! You get clay guys and fight them like Mortal Kombat."
• Friend: "That sounds cool!"
• -At my house-
• Friend: "I'm leaving. This game is really bad."
• N64 ERA
• Me: "This time I have a good game."
• Friend: "Oh boy, here we go again..."
• Me: "Mega Man 64!"
• Friend: "Mega Man?! AWESOME!"
• -At my house-
• Friend: "Um.... This isn't Mega Man. Give me my time back! I'm leaving!"
• GAME BOY ERA
• Me: "Look at this cool game I got for my birthday! It's called Kid Dracula!"
• Friend: "That sounds like a cool game. Do you kill Dracula?"
• Me: "No, I think you ARE Dracula."
• Friend: "COOOOOOOOLLLLL.... Can I see?"
• -After I get the game started up-
• Friend: "This is why I never thought you were my friend. That's a cheap chinese game. Why else would it be like Mega Man?"

...and that's how I lost a friend and alienated the entire class for a few years!



Anyway....

My tastes haven't changed much since then, except now my game choices are actually known games instead of things no one has heard of.

My tastes in gaming ....... Well I can't stand DLC or 4-player co-op. I prefer the old days when gaming was a sad, lonely hobby for losers, not the socially acceptable pasttime it is now.

Well...when I was young, I sorta played anything. Puzzles, RTS'es, point-n-click, platformers. At first platformers and fighters (double dragon style) were my favorite, but maybe that was just because the gameboy/SNES had so many of them. Then FPS'es became my favorite. Lately, the market is pretty stagnant on that one. Thanks to graphic boosts, the amount of enemies is reduced a lot. And multiplayer never got me that much (it seems like you either met someone who wiped the floor with you, or a bunch of clowns who move just in straight lines and accuse you of cheating).

I'm also more and more fed up with gaming on a PC. While installing bulletstorm, it tried to convince me for getting it on the xbox instead (WTF???). Worse: yesterday I tried to play bioshock 2. It wouldn't let me because that stupid windows live account thing wouldn't accept my password.
(result: I reinstalled Unreal: return to Na Pali instead and probably had more fun with it than I ever would with bioshock 2).

Either way...since PC-games got progressively worse, I moved over to the wii. At least that just plays without giving me a hard time.


For the future...not decided. I find myself flipping through gaming magazines being totally indifferent to yet another breathtaking warfare environment. In fact, the retro gaming and the indie games interest me the most. It's a bit creepy, in some way: I bought a second hand PSP, and almost the first thing I did was pawn all the games for it and installed emulators on it (I want a handheld to PLAY games...not stare at loading screens so the next environment-which-you-can-hardly-see-on-a-small-screen gets loaded in).

My taste hasn't changed much. I always loved momentum based games, action-adventures and games with good stories so titles like Sonic1-3, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, PanzerDragoon or FF7 were always among my favorites.

And it hasn't changed much: Nowadays I still love all those from above and similar to my taste back then I grew to love Mirrors Edge, Prince of Persia, Shenmue or BG&E...

I really hated FPSes back in the day but nowadays I enjoy them in local multiplayer... Though the campain in those games still bore me!

I'm a gamer and tried almost every genres.
I just like discovering new games and testing them to increase my knowledge. (I just miss time to play and friends to share them)


I play the game because it's fun and I like it, not only because of the genre.
Though, I'm playing more Adventure/RPG/action games.
I'm not too fond of FPS (I don't like the controls on a console, I think it's better a mouse or wiimote for precision).
I don't like sports games, even if I try them sometime.


On NES, I played mostly pateforms (Ninja gaiden, batman, duck tales, mario's, new zaeland story, wizard & warrior, Castlevania, etc.), and some other style (Zelda, Dragon ball, Double dragon, etc.)

On Amiga, I played a lot of point-and-click (Lucas games) and Real Time Strategy games (dune2), adventure, mysteries. Arcades. Pinballs. Shootemups.

On Snes, I played a lot of genre and a lot of games. I bought mainly Adventure and RPG games.
Then came the computer and emulators and I played a lot of unknown Snes games

On PS1/PS2/DC, I focused mainly on RPGs and Action/adventure games. I played a little other style.

N64: Adventure, Action. (castlevania, Zelda)

DS/Wii : Multiple genre. Enjoying simple and short games session on DS (picross).


I play only games based on my interest now instead of trying them all, as I miss time to play a lot. I prefer games with short play session on portable consoles.
And it's still based on Action/adventure/RPG on Home consoles since Snes era.

It's not piracy syndrome (where you lost interest in games), it's the contrary: Too many interest and not enough time syndrome!

No real change except I import all games now, due to the Western gaming selecting being stagnated, I blame Microsoft for it, the Western game market was never this bad as it is now.

But... Skyrim.

In all honesty Skyrim, being as good as it is, isn't exactly game changing. It's still mostly formulaic with the other Elder Scrolls games, they just made combat less shitty and made the world a little better. It's basically "Oblivion but it doesn't suck".

That being said, there's still plenty of new things in the western market.

First it was only platformers for me (Sonic 3K FTW) then I started getting into fighting and racing games because I could play with my brother.
Then as time went on, and he stopped gaming, I went back to platformers and started playing RPGs. Single player stuff.
Now I'm sort of varied, I'll play any game that looks cool or has a nice story, but if it has Sonic in it, I'll play it until I S/A rank every goddamned stage.

I started gaming with a gameboy when I was 7. I liked fighting games then (Power Quest was my first game) and then came pokémon. I never really liked platformers back then because they where to hard for me.
Then I went through years of Pokémon. I bought my GBA SP just to play Pokémon, and the only games I've played on that where hours of Pokémon and Dragonball Z, so I only liked 'light' RPG's. I bought some other games for it but I found them quite dull (Star Wars, Wario Land IV, Harry Potter 3). Furthermore I played Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 on the PC and some other RTS games like Age of Empires

This all changed when I got my DS at the age of 13/14. I started playing puzzle games, Point-and-Click games, adventure games and real RPG's like FF, actually almost everything.
I also got a good laptop at around 16. Then I started playing FPS (although I suck at them), TPS and more RTS games and I also started to like some Platformers.
I also have a Wii, PSP and 3DS now. Haven't played a lot on my Wii, just Red Steel, both Zelda's and Pokemon Battle Revolution and some other games. I quite enjoy my PSP for Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and other RPG's.
I can't say there are a lot of PS3/Xbox 360 games that appeal to me since I'm not a heavy FPS player. To me most games on PS3/Xbox lack a good story and is to focussed on fun gameplay.

Now I actually play all kinds of things. The only things I don't like are Sports-games, Fighting games, Racing-games (except mario Kart) and I have to say only 'realistic' shooters appeal to me probably because of the lack of story.

16: Pokémon/Nintendo/RTS/FPS/Adventure/a lot of DS games
now (20): Any game with a good story on any console/Pokémon/Games with really fun gameplay but not necessarily a good story

This may be off topic, it may not. I dunno.

Multiplayer games are a bit different, now that I think about it. For example, Super Smash Bros. Back when online was barely a thing outside PC gaming, I used to invite a few friends over and play that shit all day everyday. We'd kick eachothers asses and it was just...fun. Same goes for Melee and Brawl. But if I was playing any FPS, say CoD, I'd much rather play online than splitscreen. Back in the days of Goldeneye and such splitscreen was awesome, but that lack of variety of skill and enemies has become so great nowadays that I'd rather endure getting my ass handed to me (I suck at FPS on consoles...) with a friend than kicking the ass of one guy.

Now I just feel like I'm rambling, so I have no idea if anyone else get's what I'm saying but hey, I just woke up.

I stayed on the Retro stage for a long time until Ratchet and Clank brought me into 3D gaming.
Then i tried out a bunch of PS2 games, which was an awesome system other than the fact the keep breaking for no reason.
Then i got a Wii and got into Homebrew and then I got a PS3 which revived ratchet and clank for me.
Now I am awaiting The Ratchet and Clank Trilogy Which will be the best game known to man!

When I was a kid we'd all gather at my house and play. I lived out in the country for the most part growing up and one of my best friends lived on the other side of the woods behind my house. He would come walking down out of those woods on most days to play some Super C, Double Dragon 2, or TMNT 2&3. Once online came into play on the consoles I'd play PSO non stop on the Dreamcast and Unreal Championship on the original XBOX. The SOCOM series was my game of choice for Online multi-player for PS2. Now I can say that I'd rather go back to having some friends over to play some multiplayer. One reason being is I'm rather tiered of the kiddies and their shit talking on line. That was one of my deciding factors in not re-upping my Live subscription last year. The second reason being we play on a 100" HD projector screen so it's not like we have to squint at a little 25" TV like when I was growing up. I also like being able to see someones face when they get schooled.




I can deal fine with loosing @ a game but when you got people with just plain bad sportsmanship thats another story. There's no need to tell someone they suck or any of the numerous derogatory remarks that get spewed.

All of my consoles are from Nintendo and all of my favorite franchise from them. BUT, I play games from all systems (don't care if it even comes from Sony, as long as the game is fun, I'll play it.) Heck I'm not a FPS fan, but I played Halo and COD and it was fun. (Don't stab me with the repitiveness of COD since I don't play increadibly long hours like most die hard fans. For me though, It's not system, it's THE GAME. If it's for my taste, I'll play it.
Although recently, I've been leaning toward Strategy RPG... (Luminous Arc and the like). XD
I also like Retro games, I'm not a graphic whore. LOL

Agreed wholeheartedly with the little kiddies statement. Which is why I only play online with friends on party chat so we can drown out the 10 year olds.

This thread has made me realize I've been gaming for nineteen years.

When I was younger, I was gaming on my Master System just playing Sonic as it was the only game I had. So I liked platformers.

Several years later I got a PSX. I got several games with it (Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 2, Porsche Challenge and Adidas Power Soccer) which broadened my horizons. However I loved the Crash trilogy and platformers reigned supreme. I was very immediate gratification with games than, I really had no patience for slow or story driven games. I just wanted to jump around and drive shit.

It wasn't until I was a teenager, I was willing to play slower and story-driven games. I find myself enjoying numerous genres now among numerous consoles. I really like TPS and adventure/point and click games now. Whilst my love of platformers has somewhat diluted over the years. Overall my taste has evolved to be more inclusive of varying genres.

I loved to play Astro Warrior on the Master System. It's one of my Favorite shmups and I still enjoy playing it today. I'd also spend hours playing a game called The Ninja.

Civ 2, C&C, Red Alert. Those games were a big part of my childhood. Loved the NES with Super Mario Bros / 3. After that the next 10 or so years went with PC gaming mainly with various genres (RTS, FPS, Sim City-types, etc). In 2008 I bought a DS Lite and basically hammered quite a few hundred (probably thousands?) hours with it. Also my brother bought a PS3 in 2009 or 2010 and basically that took my gaming to the "next level". Currently playing lots of RPG/FPS/TPS on the consoles and well.. Trying to find interesting games on the PSP after getting it, and of course still going through my DS library (currently SMT: Devil Survivor). Bought a 3DS, but so far haven't had as big a thrill with it as I did with the DS Lite when I bought it.

During the last 6 months or so I've been pretty much occupied with my thesis so gaming has been at minimum. After I finish the thesis paper I'll probably through a week of my life away and finish ME2 with DLC and start ME3

My tastes haven't really changed all that much.

I mean, I was born in 89, so I grew up with platformers after having an SNES. I couldn't get enough of them. Simple design, yet beautiful to the eyes. Then when I got a PS1 I got into Final Fantasy VII. I never heard of Final Fantasy up until that point and I didn't know what an RPG was. I played it, loved it because of how the story sucked me in making me feel like I was part of the game. Moved on to FFVIII (which I still think is amazingly better than VII) then so on and so forth. I've been an RPG fan ever since, but I'll still let platformers suck many of my life hours away.

I suppose around the PS2 era, I was more into shooters because of games like SOCOM 2 and SOCOM 3. But I still had RPG's, but I was more into online gaming with SOCOM 2. Now I'm back to RPG's. I can't get enough of them. Games like Lost Odyssey are the reason why I'm a huge RPG fan.

Well i started out on my bro's Atari, we had a few games, none of which i can name; i was really young. Soon after we got a Sega Genesis and this was when i started to play game all my spare time; i mostly recall playing Sonic and they were a few other games i can't really recall. At that time it didn't really matter which genre was which, all that matters is that it was video games and it was fun. Then came my prime gaming time with the Ps1, we had a lot of games when i first got it. Found myself mostly playing 2-player games (fighting/car-racing/some adventure) along with my brother. Then one day my cousin graced me with FF: VIII; which i found myself really enjoying. My immersion into Rpgs changed everything. When i was at the end of disc 1 in FF: VIII, i didn't have the other disc to continue so i asked my cousin for it and he gave me FF: VII instead. Which i ended up playing and finishing. It was awesome. My Rpg gland became more active than any other genre. So i mostly played rpg games for the Ps1 but there were still a lot of other games that i really liked which wasn't Rpgs.
Within my Ps2 into my Ps3 days i enjoyed a lot of action-adventure and a few rpgs here and there. That's when i discovered the DS emulator for pc which we all gotta admit was only good for playing rpg games.

In the end i prefer to play rpg games ever since i knew about the genre but i still enjoy other genre's from time to time. I didn't really play games based on genre's but mostly on what i had to play. Most of the games i really liked had a leveling up system which wasn't all rpgs.

As of present i would play any genre only if the game interests me. I am not biased against any genre but i am biased towards rpgs.
