i was thinking, we know the wii u is coming this year somewhere between (june - november) confirmed.
but some are so sure that the next xbox & ps will also come around that time. some even ignoring wii u.
why so sure tho? we have no names, no specs, we have roamers. (i know the wii u started as roamers but were also leaks)

also its roamerd (not confirmed) that the wii u will only be 50% more powerful than the ps3. if that's true then why would microsoft & sony rush into making new consoles so soon, with sony just releasing the vita & the ps move & kinect finally getting good spotlight. tho since 260 was the 1st released this gen there's no telling.

some seem to be forget last gen... well the current consoles (wii, 360, ps3) are last gen now.. with wii u coming.. but last last gen (dreamcast, ps2, gamecube, xbox) those consoles co-existed & shared games. xbox was close to being 2x as powerful than gamecube, gamecube was 2x more powerful than ps2, ps2 was 1.1x more than dreamcast. (with the specs below)
those consoles shared games & co-existed. resident evil 4(gamecube, ps2), gta(dreamcast, ps2, xbox), sonic heroes(ps2, gamecube, xbox).
yet with the specs, far after the ps3 was released people still praised the ps2 & even dreamcast.
also last gen with wii being the weakest it stood its ground this long & shared a few franchises like call of duty, dead space, resident evil.

dreamcast, ps2, gamecube, xbox specs.
Dreamcast
CPU = 200MHz (128-bit Hitachi SH4 RISC) (1.4 GFLOPS)
GPU = 100 MHz (PowerVR2 CLX2)
RAM = 16MB (64-bit, 100MHz)
VRAM = 8MB (4x 16-bit, 100MHz)
External Storage = 128KB (VMU)
VMU CPU = 8-bit (Sanyo LC8670 "Potato")

Playstation 2, Slim
CPU = 294.912MHz (295MHz)(299 on slim) (64-bit Emotion Engine) (6.2 GFLOPS)
GPU = 147MHz (Graphics Synthesize)
RAM = 4MB(DRAM "imbedded")
External Storage = 8MB (PS2 Memory Card), 1MB (PS1 Memory Card), (40GB HDD)

Gamecube
CPU = 486MHz (IBM "Gekko" PowerPC ) (1.9 GFLOPS)
GPU = 162MHz (ATi Tech"Flipper") (8 GFLOPS)
RAM = 43MB (23MB MoSys 1T-SRAM, 3MB "Internal" 1T-SRAM, 16MB DRAM.)
External Storage = 512KB,2MB, 8MB, (16MB max) (gamecube memory card)

Xbox
CPU = 733MHz (32-bit Intel Pentium III) (1.5 GFLOPS)
GPU = 233MHz (nVidia NC2A) (5.8 GFLOPS)
RAM = 64MB (DDR SDRAM 200MHz)
Internal Storage = 8, 10GB (HDD)
External Storage = 8MB (xbox Memory Card)

what i see happening this year & probably next 2 years is:
wii u being released(not having a game drought like 3ds had at launch). (nintendos learning to surprise us)
games start to co exist on wii u, 360, ps3. but more on wii u.
microsoft & sony keeping with kinect & move & possibly releaseing 1st details about next consoles mid 2013.
because of 1 console being out at the time some other develouper makes a console to compete with wii u. (google? sharp? apple?, samsung?,ect)
then there be like 4 or 5 diffrent console (wii u, ps4, microsoft, other?)
consoles like onlive gain some hype because wii u being the only console at the time.

as for names?
we all know wii u, ps4, next xbox im seeing it being called microsoft warp, microsoft K or microsoft LX(Last X, last console using xbox slogan)

the power?
Wii u = CPU = 5GHz, GPU = 4GHz, RAM = 10GB (said to have lots of ram)
PS4 = CPU = 6GHz, GPU = 3.5, RAM = 6GB
360-2 = CPU = 4.8GHz, GPU = 4.5GHz, RAM = 6GB
edit:lol i noticed i had GHz ram XD

the change?
last gen every console wii, DS/DSi, PS3, PSP, 360) gained online. (tho ps2 & xbox had kinda online & gamecube had basic online for few games) next gen i see a huge leap. cross platform online. because of the wii u being the 1 next gen console out so long & the one following (if there is 1) & sony & 360-2, everyone agrees to share online services so we can play games between consoles.

imagine playing a ps4 game & being able to put in xbox live gamer tags, ps4 ids, & wii u friendcodes (hopefully 1 code like 3DS) for next gen games instead of for only that console. wii u playing online wiht ps4 & 360-2. & other way around. also single card & disk mode online with wii u & 3DS via wifi for supported games.

It's nice to see that you think that the PS4 and 360 will have 6GHz of RAM :creep:
I think that it would be up to the game developers to decide whether they want online play between consoles, it's possible but will take a lot of effort. I'm fairly certain that Portal 2 can have ps3 players playing with PC players, I don't know about 360 though.

A) Cross platform online play? You have to remember, these companies are competitors. They don't stand to profit much from cross platform play; plus, with the consoles (potentially) being radically different, creating one online service for all three could be a programming nightmare.

B) There seems to be a huge assumption here that the Wii U will be a big success. How well it does could certainly shape Microsoft and Sony's next consoles.

C) This is pretty much baseless speculation (More on the level of "Wouldn't it be nice..." rather than "With this information, we can safely predict..."). Considering that Microsoft and Sony haven't even announced that any new consoles exist (with Sony adamant about sticking to the PS3's 10 year life span), it's kind of silly to be making predictions at this point anyway.

The answers will be here soon enough; all it takes is a little time.

I have to wonder about this- I assume most games have abstracted this into a layer on top of the usual network stuff as far as the actual game goes long ago leaving the issues mainly to be differences in control (in a world where most will pay the silly money for a mouse there has to be a reason nobody will put in the little effort to control such a game on the PC with a console controller), whatever lag mitigation the games will be using (movement prediction and such) and the resources to do it with, general resource issues although it looks like the next few years all the consoles will be nearly identical (and they more or less were already) and whatever the consoles themselves limit/require in terms of signing into their online component and I figure if you abstract it once you might as well do it twice (we already saw the odd MMO have dual options here).

Portal 2 on the PS3 isn't using the PSN, it's using Steam IIRC. You can play Steam games with other Steam members. It's just how it works.

In terms of marketing, it'd just be incredibly stupid to merge online capabilities. Companies pride themselves on their online capabilities. It's like making your console exclusives for another platform (thus making them not exclusive). While everyone would want it, it's not gonna happen.

Nintendo : Lot's of RAM.

Us: 8GB yay

Reality: 256MB

lol When nintendo says "this is a lot" it's because they're used to work under minimal low-end hardware.

I highly doubt the Wii U is going to have a 5 GHz CPU, a 4 GHz GPU and 10 GB of RAM.
My thoughts:

Wii U: 3,6 GHz quad-core CPU - 1,5 GB RAM
Next PS: 4,0 GHz quad-core CPU - 2 GB RAM
Next XBOX: 3,6 GHz quad-core CPU - 2 GB RAM

I'm probably overestimating, though.

A) hmm...I'm not really convinced. The games themselves are made by a distributor who would obviously love cross platform play. And as for nintendo, sony and microsoft...their main purpose is mainly in selling the most consoles. From those, Nintendo has the least to lose with it (most people buy their consoles for the first party titles anyway).
Of course just them being okay with cross platform doesn't mean much if sony and microsoft refuse to co-operate (which they will, because they don't gain anything in it)...but cross platform gaming from a wiiU with a PC could be a selling argument.
(yeah, I know: nintendo probably doesn't give their third party companies THAT much liberty, but it would be the best option).

B) that depends on the game lineup. Perhaps nintendo can pull a new franchise-starter out of their ass, but I'm personally hoping there'll be two or three "must have" games for hardcore gamers. At best one that makes decent use of the controller in the process (I can't help but wonder how good that touchpad would be as a mouse replacement for a RTS game).

C) absolutely agree.

Uhhh... You do realize Sony sold the PS3 Slim at a loss and Nintendo did the same with the 3DS, right? So they could sell software and stuff, remember? Also, why would you say the WiiU is more likely for crossplatform play? It's the least likely. Microsoft does have Games for Windows (Shadowrun anyone?) and the PS3 has Steam. The WiiU has an incompatible controller and Nintendo have enjoyed alienating themselves from everyone else over the last generation.

I didn't knew that of the PS3 or 3DS.

I could say that I meant crossplatform in the sense of console vs console, but you're right: nintendo is lagging behind when it comes to pc connectivity as well.

Sorry...I should've thought this thing more through...

im just hoping nintendo would make there products more open.
ps3, & 360 you can put movies, music, & play music during gameplay. & use usb flash drives.
wii can view movies, & music, & pics via sd card but very limited to jpeg & mp4 movies & music.

3DS uses mp3 & mp4 music,. but you have to convert pictures to jpeg, & convert movies to avi & a certian converter to use on 3DS.

wii u will finally use usb storage so SD card & external usb sticks & usb hdds can be used. but will it have a more variety of media formats like more pic formats, video formats, music formats? & will it alow music during gameplay like 360 & ps3? that was something i hoped teh 3DS would have by now playing music during gameplay via sd card.
