Iran's police have outlawed Battlefield 3 - the video game is now illegal.

"All computer stores are prohibited from selling this illegal game," the police told an Iranian IT magazine, reported by AFP (via IndustryGamers).

Battlefield 3 was banned because it depicted the US army fighting in Tehran, the capital city of Iran.

The Fars news agency claimed 5000 "Iranian youths" had prompted the ban by petitioning against the game online.

"We understand that the story of a video game is hypothetical," the group apparently wrote, "[but] we believe the game is purposely released at a time when the US is pushing the international community into fearing Iran."

Not that EA minds; Battlefield 3 wasn't ever made available to buy in Iran, which means all copies sold there were illegal to begin with.

"In that Battlefield 3 is not available for purchase in Iran, we can only hope the ban will help prevent pirated copies reaching consumers there," EA commented.

importing will be made nearly impossible within a generation or 2. They'll make games digital only and then they'll check that not only does the game match your system's region they'll also have a method of determining the system's location(such as where your ip is registered to as far as country at least) so they can only let you download games if you are in your region. that way they can continue to control prices

lol lol i think they are doing that them self

I suggest you watch Iran: The Most Dangerous Nation? Good documentary about modern Iran made. It's by Ted Koppel too, the big name in news coverage of the Iranian hostage crisis.

I don't see the ban as absurd. I think bans in general on games are bad but they do have a point. I haven't played Battlefield 3's campaign at all but I assume they're not invading Iran because everyone there is a great guy and they just wanted to hand out chocolates and friendship.

When I was younger the whole "Mp3 is stealing" thing was the current fair. Needless to say, I explained in detail how to use Napster to my class when it turned out that they had no idea what an mp3 was. I did the same thing for movies later on, my friends were watching a movie and the whole, pirating a movie is stealing forced commercial came up. They had no idea that movies could be downloaded. Same for games etc. Saying something is banned or illegal just makes me want it more. Besides, the real basis for piracy is a lack of a market or a market with unfair prices.

That said, there are plenty of games that portray the U.S. in a bad light but I still enjoyed then. Fallout series was a slam against American ideals. It was also a blast to play. Not that it matters since it is Iran and last time I checked, the youth over there isn't happy with the current leadership. They don't want us to lead, but they also don't like the fact that only the elders are leading by law and calling the shots. It rings of whenever China has protest against something the U.S. is doing. Most of the time the government is misleading it's people. Sometimes it's right on the money. Sorting it is the battle.

Fallout was more of a parody on old American ideals that are since seen as outdated, such as culture trends and hating on Commies. If it was intended to be a real slam on American ideals then it wouldn't have been set in an alternate universe that developed so differently from our own.

There are very few games that enjoy showing countries where the game will sell largely in a bad light.

It doesn't prevent anyone from pirating or getting a digital copy from EA themselves by going through a proxy or something.

that does in no way make it illegal just because you need to import it doesn't make the copies illegal

Video game publishers: If we don't approve IT'S ILLEGAL!

It's illegal for it to be SOLD over there, as in stores selling the imported game. Importing it is legal, buying it over there is not.

Shame?
The USA and the other NATO countries using propaganda in games and media to prepare for the war in Iran.
This is a real shame and the iran will resist. Imagine 1938: germany releases a game in that you can invade france....

I'd totally play it.

I don't believe there will be an open war with Iran. Iran will fall by it's own hand. Every country will fall sooner or later. No country is immune to this. Older countries will go first. Iran is really old. It's not going to be my problem however since I'm 26 and the U.S. will probably last longer than I'll live. What will completely destroy Iran would be an alternate fuel need, not source. Stop trying to find a different fuel and start changing the stuff that needs said fuel to no longer need it. Every country (minus Iran) would benefit from no longer buying/taking oil from Iran. China would benefit the greatest. Since smart people are made fun of here in the U.S. and the strong stupid people are somehow popular and choice, I'm counting on China to make said item and save the world. That left a copper taste in my mouth.
