There really haven't been that many interesting MMOs out. There's several PLANNED, but none actually released yet. The MMO scene has been ridiculously slow. The only two "MMOs" i've played and actually had fun doing so in recent history was Dragon Nest and Rusty Hearts. Both instanced action MMOs.

Not released yet but, you could keep an eye on
Tera Online (open world action MMO)
Path of Exile (Diablo but better, apparently)
Guild wars 2 (it's guild wars)

There was another i'm pretty sure...but I can't remember it.

Phantasy Star Online 2

Doubt i'd mention that. I like Phantasy Star, but I can't ever take it seriously. Though I haven't seen any footage of #2...maybe its changed.

The new Knights of the Old Republic just had a beta. I heard good things.

It's a generic MMO with jedi and sith. Not very fun, but I suppose any star wars nerd would absolutely love it.
Depressing, since it sounded so cool during development...then come closed beta and...eugh.

Swtor is amazing, and before you call me a fanboy, I saw my first Star wars movies last month, and I don't like the films that much.

Swtor has a lot of promise, the only thing its lacking right now is multiple end game raids.

I suppose I should point out, i'm a competitive MMO'r, not a casual MMO'r. I prefer PvP over PvE. If a game has lame, boring and uninteresting PvP (this can be caused by several things: character building, weak combat, no PvP features, etc).
Pretty much, PvP caters to the competitive populace, PvE caters to the social populace.

Probably why I haven't been interested in MMOs for quite a while. They're all PvE with a side of weak PvP.

< Played Wow since launch and was the main tank of a top 30 us Guild for the past 3, Played other mmo's aswell.

The 25 levels I've gotten in weekend beta was better than the last two expansion packs

You can play WoW all you want for as long as you want, it's a casual social MMO with heavy PvE and piss poor PvP.
But that's why you like SW:TOR, lol. It's like WoW, but star wars.
Well actually, it's like RIFT (which is like WoW) but Star Wars themed.
It does do stuff better than both RIFT and WoW, but doing better than the bare minimum an MMO should operate at isn't great. SW:ToR is essentially doing something genius, it's attempting to cater to the majority (social MMO gamers) AND Star Wars nerds (there's a lot of them). Could be quite successful.

But like I said, i'm a competitive MMO gamer. If the OP isn't, then my points are pretty much invalid anyways.

There are lots of free mmo's. For example: Perfect world is bulking with em, like PWI, jade dynasty (a solid reccomendation) and other stuff. Dynasty warriors online is fun too, and you have eden eternal wich is very fun (anime game with lots of classes). There's also Redliff, a somewhat historical MMORPG wich involves ancient China and its weapons. Its based on... the battle of redcliff.

Gw2 is said to come next year or so.
There's also league of legends, wich is a fucking awesome game. It's fun and keeps you busy for hours and hours.

If it weren't for the insanely expensive item shop, and abundance of hackers you literally can't do anything about...S4 league would rock.
Not too sure why they haven't implemented a "vote kick" yet.

Oh, I don't play WoW anymore, I stopped in Cata, So dont bunch me with that game.

However, Trying to say that Wow wasn't Hardcore in TBC, is a fucking lie, that expansion was the pinnacle of the game.

You say you're hardcore MMO's, than whats a good one?

Rusty Hearts was okay, but it feels like a bad dungeon crawler

Also, OP, I have a beta code if you want to try Swtor Next week's weekend beta.

I just suggested RH because I randomly downloaded it on steam and was entertained by it. I'd probably say Dungeon Fighter Online is better if they didn't murder it with OP shit in the cash shop. Though knowing Perfect World...they'll fuck up RH somehow.

WoW has never been hardcore. Its core mechanics don't allow for it. Character building is simplistic and menial. Talent building is retardedly easy. It's not that it's optimized or well explained, it just flat out is incredibly simplistic. Then 90% of character building is from gear stacking. Er, and if you're not aware, gear stacking means you just pick the stats you need and stack gear to gain the highest bonuses. Skills aren't as big a deal, but simply being able to buy every skill takes any thought out of that process as well. Even putting aside piss poor character building, the combat is simplistic. 90% of fights are simply analyzing what your opponent is and going down a pre-determined skill-sequence until they die (typically a person wont have very many to choose from either, they don't need more), and the person with the better gear will win the fight pretty much every time, assuming they're competent enough to know their own skills.
That's always been WoW's PvP. Endgame or midgame. I played WoW quite a bit back in TBC (and pre-TBC). Kinda stopped because I sold all my gold and my account, LOL. WoW accounts are worth a ton to lazy kids.

As for something better?
How about...everything?
Ragnarok Online is probably one of the best games for PvP. PvE isn't great but I actually prefer its system over most MMOs as well. But yeah, the PvP is top notch. It's one of the only games where i've had to bust out some serious math skills to plan a build. These days it's just about finding a good private server, since the official servers are complete shit.
It's the kind of game where gear will certainly help, but it wont win a fight for you. If you suck, you'll suck in any gear as any class.

Hell i'd even say Lineage 2 had better PvP. I never really got into it, but I did get to endgame and play around with PvP. It's similar to WoW's situation, but still felt more fun PvP wise. I hated the grind in that game though.

I could probably name some more if I pull out my list, but i'm lazy. it's just safe to say WoW is amazing if all you're going for is PvE and socializing, but most MMOs beat it in the PvP department.
Except being able to raid towns. That's pretty sweet. I've always liked that for PvP. Too bad it was never implemented in a PvP MMO.

Hum... I mostly play mmorpgs during their cbt's and obt's, unless it interests me, I often give up on them after a couple days... The mmorpgs I've played more recently were Vindictus (just came out in europe not long ago and its quite an interesting game, although once get on higher levels it starts to grow a tad boring), Gundam Capsule Fighter (well, I'm a gundam addict so anything with gundam on it earns my insta love), DC Universe (the quests, raids, world and all that is pretty amazing, just friggin annoyed at the lag, I'll stop playing for a while and go back when they've fixed everything, going from p2p to f2p has it's tolls I guess), Global Agenda (just found it yesterday on steam and played around 4 hours, the idea of the game is awesome, I love scifi stuff and the character creation isn't that bad, not as good as aion's or apb's but good none the less)... Hum.. Aside from these ones that I've played recently there's also Rusty Hearts, I played it in CBT and just went back yesterday since I friggin loved that game during CBT, oh... just remembered there was a really good one that was released in Europe, but had IP block, it was about angels and two different factions... Forgot it's name...

Also, the things I like the most in a game are character creation and the story. I hate having the same char as everyone else, the only games where I'm ok with that are some mmorpgs that are fun just the way they are like grand chase and elsword since the characters also have a meaning to them and same goes for RH.

This one's still in beta phase, but Blade and Soul looks really good. I recommend keeping an eye on that; I've played a bit and it's really fun.
