A little cajoling from a clever developer got Siri talking to the iPhone 4 and the iPad, but Apple's tight-lipped servers kept the conversation effectively one-sided. The last-gen port was still missing something, and developer Steven Troughton-Smith knew where to find it: a jailbroken iPhone 4S. In an interview with 9to5mac, Troughton-Smith said that getting Siri to talk to Cupertino's data servers only took ten minutes after he had all of the pieces in place. Ready for your personal assistant port? Hold the phone, the process is a bit dodgy -- our hacking hero said that getting Siri on the older device is a 20-step process, and it requires files from the iPhone 4S that he says aren't his to distribute. When asked about distributing the hack over Cydia, Troughton-Smith said it was something he couldn't be a part of. On Twitter he suggested that a release would "anger the hive," but promised to post detailed notes on the hack after a iPhone 4S jailbreak drops.

This should prove all those apple fanboys who said the 4 couldn't handle Siri wrong.
Only a matter of time until someone less scrupulous leaks this onto the internet now.

I recall seeing something about the ipod touch model's microphone being weaker than the phone variant.
AKA, you're probably gonna have to yell at it...

from the vid, I didn't see much difference in response time or anything, but... I'm not sure.

Also, think about it: face time and the phone app on pre-iphone 4s uses the microphone (does it not?) to transmit sound, but you don't have to yell at it to recognize and transmit your voice.

Pretty cool; so the regular 4 has enough power to run siri, too? I wonder what the new (better) processor on the 4S is for then... anybody can enlighten me?
Siri actually takes no processing power. It sends data to the cloud to be processed which is why an internet connection is always needed for it. The problem was making the servers think that an iPhone4 is an iPhone4S.

What kind of idiot would you have to be to believe Apple's bullcrap about the 4S being the only phone able to handle Siri?

There just wasn't enough different about it, so they threw in an extra feature and locked it to that revision as an extra buying incentive. Marketing, dudes. Marketing.

I wouldn't be surprised if Siri was going to be a multiplatform application before Apple bought it from SRI International.

It was going to be & they were already working on an android & blackberry port but I guess that's the reason apple bought it to keep it only in iOS .

Only a matter of time until someone less scrupulous leaks this onto the internet now.

Someone less scrupulous won't have access to a 4S jailbreak until it's made public, so it won't be available until then ;)

But yes, once there is a public 4S jailbreak, no doubt someone will dump the necessary files and post them up for everyone to enjoy, probably in an easy to install Cydia package. The guy who did this even said he'd release instructions once there is a public 4S jailbreak, so that'll make it even easier.

Now this is great news HaniKazmi. Good looking out. I used to use SiRi on my old iPhone 3GS until Apple ruined the service. Apple you suck for this crap you do :tpi:
