The weekend is here, what are you playing?

portable.jpg

It's been something of a quiet week in the gaming space, with the deluge of big hitters trying to find their place before GTA 6 launches really kicking off next week. Even so we've had some good releases; Valheim got its 1.0 release, there's a new Legend of Heroes game, and Mewgenics found its way onto the Switch 2. Coming into the weekend now, what are you playing? Are you keeping yourself occupied with new games, or digging deep into the backlog?

On my side of the fence it's a heck of a lot of Monster Hunter, specifically the English translation of Portable 3rd on the PSP. It's something of a culture shock to go back to a game that doesn't have a target camera, but at the very least Portable 3rd has a lot of the modern-ish niceties that at least minimise the friction a touch. I just fought my first Qurupeco in maybe ten years though and can soundly say that deserved to be left behind in the third generation. It is abhorrent. Beyond that though, I'm also grabbing my partner where available to smash through Orbitals on the Switch 2. I'll keep my thoughts light here with me planning to put together a video and write up for it, but hey, it's pretty great.

Let us know how you're getting on this weekend.

Hot damn do I feel that. I really should've gone back to that instead of starting Portable 3rd. I just got excited for Outlanders and thought having an Android handheld setup for Monster Hunter would be fun lol
Oh I pray Outlanders won't blow like the Go (or was it Now?) one and take itself seriously enough to respect us fans.

I did see this and got quite excited:

Controller support at launch is really what I was waiting to hear. Doesn't sound too heavy on the gacha elements either. Will definitely give it a shot, though time will tell whether it lives up to the expectations.

I'm playing Taking my kids to the ball game, Swing by Safeway for groceries, BC Cannabis for some pre-rolls, pick up my wife's power wheelchair from the maintenance folks. And if they don't want to go to the beach later, I can hopefully put in an hour or two of Star Wars Zero Company. :creep:

Nothing new unfortunately but just played hide and seek with a few network cables in a wreck of a comms cabinet if that counts?

Will be getting some gta v on switch in though after double pepperoni and hot honey pizza 🤤

Started a new file of Crash Bandicoot 4 with the aim of finishing it this time

I preorderd Control Resonant and am eagerly awaiting it to be released.

EDIT: @Scarlet clean your setup Bro!
The NHanced Mod for PC is an amazing mod to make Crash 4 much less mind numbing to 100%

Looks like it'll be a solid, mobile, game and while I will 200% give it a whirl, it by its own nature won't touch that glorious feel of Wilds and I've been waiting and praying that the franchise get to that smooth and expansive flow that Wilds delivered to the T. Hell, we even got crossplay that united the entire player base and in the past that would have been one major advantage to a phone vs a full game, but alas.

Been trying to finish The Outer Worlds 2, but it keeps throwing more at me. I like it, its fun and better gameplay, graphics than the first one, but the story is not as good. Trying to finish bunch games never finished, so I can make space for upcoming GTA6. I bet it will be close to 200gb.

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X. Solid RPG, but a bit too easy, I didn't even know it's a sequel to Tales of Symphonia until I saw that there's half-elves and the moons of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla.

Tri was my first MH game so I may be biased, but I really like that fight. He's one of the few early game monsters that can really give you a hard time if he calls a Deviljho or Diablos.

At some point I want to give the PS2 games a go, if only to fight a few of the monsters that never made it to other games. I think most of the interesting ones are from Monster Hunter 2 though. I think the Yama Tsukami is also a bit more interesting in MH2 vs Freedom Unite.

I'll get to it eventually. The third generation was always my favourite, the older ones are a touch harder to get into.
I tried the original PS2 game and it's rough. There's no farm, you attack with the right joystick which feels weird, and monster hitboxes are a mess, I remember carting one time because I had very low hp, and was standing too close to a near dead Yian Kut-Ku when it passed right next to me limping. Then there's monsters like Cephadrome, who spends the entire fight swimming under the sand. You need to use sonic bombs to force it to come out, but you can only carry a few, so if you can't kill it before they run out you'll fail the quest. The game is extremely janky, but it has a certain charm that they haven't been able to replicate with the newer games.

ooo a dual screen retro android device ? or modded 3ds ?
i'm interested in buying one
The former. This is the Ayn Thor and I've been a big fan of it. I know the price has increased since release, but I still think it's worth it to the right person. I got the max 1tb when it was around $450, it is now $570 for that model which is a bit steep. My recommendation would probably be the pro model if you want switch emulation and some PC stuff, the max 512gb if you are doing heavier switch and PC, or the Base with an SD card if you aren't interested in switch/PC emulation.

How's the performance? Solid 30 or 20 each?
No idea 🤣 I've not actually monitored it but I'd say it's like it was on PS2... Fluid enough to play, at least for me... Never played the og one on Playstation!

Im on an erista model using std overclock also (1785), mariko models do perform better apparently.

I need to finish Majora's Mask, have started the final dungeon.

I finished the SNK Picross game last night so need to find another relaxation puzzle game too.

To be fair I started with 3 Ultimate so I do kinda get it. It’s a fight I like more in the later game when I’m set up (and conceptually it’s one of the coolest monsters in the series). Admittedly a good chunk of my struggle was the misguided assumption that there was a limit to what it could call. After hunting three of its friends and running out of all supplies, I just about managed to put it down lol

Finally got Rhythm Heaven/Paradise Groove recently, probably the only "new" game I've actually looked forward to in the last years.
I'm doing my first playthrough completely blind (as in no vision). I got through 4 Remixes so far. I'm really liking it.

Star Wars Zero Company. :creep:
MAKE time for this gem. I had an incredible blast with the playthrough and this game just did everything perfectly from XCOM perspective. Only hint besides Scout up and double down I'll give ya - when a mission seems to tell you to RUN, you do nothing but and ask questions never.

You're enticing me more to fire up the first one now!

You lovely Nintenderp babies, hahahaha. Freedom forever! I do thus kinda miss not being there for Tri nor the 3DS stuff when it was all in its prime, but you know not the joys of juggling the los couple amidst their marital dispute and that fight being when the game mechanics finally click in your head. Speaking of, what were both of your game mechanic click moments?
