Rockstar Games releases statement regarding recent GTA VI leaks

Since August 18th an online persona going by Cyberleek have been releasing gameplay clips of Rockstar Games upcoming GTA VI. The leaks appear to be from an internal playable build, though the age of development for the shown footage is unknown, with some reports estimating it to be between 1~2 years old.

The leaks, which we won't be sharing here for legal reasons have shown a substantial amount of actual gameplay; which since the original 2022 leaks have been the only look at gameplay we've seen so far. Rockstar has remained extremely tight lipped about the game and besides Trailers 1 & 2 have shown very little of the game which has been in development since 2014.

Today Rockstar have finally released a statement regarding these leaks. The team behind the game are apparently heartbroken and disapointed to see the game revealed ahead of it's scheduled Netflix exclusive "extended look" which premieres tomorrow August 27th at 3pm ET on Netflix and 9pm ET on YouTube (UK times: 8pm - Netflix, 2am - YouTube).

Here is their statement in full:

Rockstar Games said:
Dear all,
We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.

We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.

We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week — your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon.

Sincerely, Rockstar Games

What do you think? Are leaks like these simply inevitable for a project of this scale? Or has Rockstar been too restrictive with what it has shown, drip feeding their fans for more than a decade? Has this approach inadvertently fanned the flame for leaks like this to happen?

Will you be watching the official Extended Look arriving tomorrow?

How can you be so cruel to the poor corporation? Their heart is literally breaking ;O;
The houser brothers are slime. Not as scuzzy as
Randy pitchford getting away with carrying c.p. along with company files to medieval times,
but definitely scum nonetheless.

The houser brothers famously insist on holding boardroom meetings in strip clubs in the area of the nearest studio. If some board member decides to speak against it or bows out, they make a point to hound and steamroll them for the following week.

If any subordinate speaks out about the bugs introduced by one of their design decisions, they don't even bother entertain examining it; they just fire the programmer on the spot. And they practically invented the automatic process of suing freshly fired employees with anti-competitive clauses as their reasoning.

As long as either Houser is allowed in the building, Rockstar can burn and I wouldn't blink a tear to put out the flame.

Yeah I know. I was referencing the "Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak [...] has been heartbreaking" line from their statement.

Rockstar needs to figure out whether they want GTAVI to be a work of art or a consumer product, and they need to do it yesterday.
This part of your post stood out to me. Ever since the 7th gen, the industry has kind of veered into the "product as experience" lane.

I think Rockstar really does position any major GTA project as a prestige release that requires Hollywood-level hype. You know, teaser trailers for another trailer, information/footage blackout, and so on. This is just part of the industry, when it comes to big franchises, and GTA is a big moneymaker for Rockstar.

Spacing out sequels like Kingdom Hearts games (GTAV was 2013) really does help build up some hype.

they made history in a bad bad way possiblel

i'm 100% sure they had a discussion/deal with playstation to make this (digital non sence) possible cuz only GTA6 can do it, 99% of players will buy it anyway.

i'm glad i have zero hype for this game.
