Hi everyone,
Hope your day’s been going great!
I’ve had a bit of a problem last few weeks because we used. I bought off of a local store and when I got home, it worked fine until I tried updating it to a later firmware, cause it was on a early one, and now it is in a brick state..
When you turn it on, it stays on this Wii U screen forever, and sometimes I'll get lucky with this unresponsive "Hold the power button for at least four seconds screen". (Images linked below)
I’ve tried UDPIH, but it keeps freezing on 3 different SD cards (Sandisk Extreme Pro, an old Transcend, and a 1gb card from IDK where) All of them having the same result. A frozen UDPiH, where I can’t set a cold boot title, or anything. (linked as well)

I think it's a NAND/EMMC issue, but not completely sure. It does look like it all right.

I’ve tried contacting the store, multiple times, because when I bought it, they said,” If you have any issues or problems with the console, let us know”.
So I did…
First time I called the guy on the phone said to come in, but call them first, so they can get their "video game guy". I Told them that I'd be able to come over there in 1-2 weeks because of my schedule, and they said ok. But then, the owner got on the phone told me that their "video game guy" said that there was no reason to update because the nintendo online doesn't work anymore (I knew that from my 3ds.. but okay?). I don't think this "video game guy" even knows what firmware is, cause it was on a really old version! He said the same thing to come in, so I said the same thing.

Now, this week, finally, I would have time to go there tomorrow. I called the store, and the same guy from last time answered. I said I'd be able to come in tomorrow, and he said ok, call the store lcose to when you leave so we can get the "game guy" down at the same time. Everything sounded good from here, until the next day...
I call them like they said to, and a new guy answers the phone, I catch him up, and ask if the owner and the other guy are there. He says no, and he says he'll call the game guy. Then, he calls back,"I talked to our video game guy, and he said he 'doesn't do refunds'. He's a 3rd party that sells through our store."
I then say the owner of the store told me if I had any problems, to contact you guys. And this guy gives me the owner's number. I've attempted a call once, and texted as well. I'm leaving it at that.
Something about this is really sketchy.
Really.
Sketchy.

If anyone can help me or guide me in what to do in this situation, as I really don't want to lose $130 on this 😭
Thank you,
PC64
(P.S. : It looks like it may not be a HYnix console, as it has black ports instead of colored)

if it bricked immediately from a system update, than it is probably a CBHC brick. The likelyhood of it being anything else is low.

id keep after the refund every few days until you get it (unless they can fix it for ya)

Not a bad idea..
I'm gonna think about it.
Wait. Would they catch it?
If you don't do it too often, nah. I may have or have not done the same before. Just keep in mind a Gamestop refund takes like 3 weeks sometimes.

Also, confirm the Gamestop unit works, as I get a lot of junk from Gamestop.

I don't have CBHC installed yet. I was about to mod it before this whole mess started the night I got it. Everything I've tried to search up about says CBHC bricks...

Ah. Well I was saying like maybe it had CBHC and they didn't tell you or didn't know. Cause updating with CBHC will get you that brick. But yeah if you can't work it out with UDPiH I'd push for the refund or do the gamestop thing.

edit: I dug into it and I'm possibly wrong about CBHC being the most likely culprit. I think what I was reading was outdated.
The steps I would take remain the same though.

Ok, but I'm still not sure about the Gamestop thing, and I don't know how good of an idea it is. i had another idea, but I could get another bricked console. I was thinking about getting a console only US UNIT from Ebay for like 50-70 bucks. I'm not exactly sure what path Im gonna take, but I'm really annoyed with this rn.

Like a new deck and you just pair your wii u remote and parts with it?
Nice.
That has the plus side of you can still tinker with bricked one indefinitely/upon new developments.

I'd be annoyed too. Really just on principle that they're not getting back with you to remedy.
Good luck!

Thank you! That's exactly what I was thinking: using the bricked one for tinkering!

Also, do you have any idea why UDPiH is freezing? Because others with similar issues have been able to get to the Recovery Menu with no problem.

I dont but this is what AI says
  • Timing Issues (Most Common): The Raspberry Pi Pico must be plugged in immediately after the Wii U logo disappears or when it first appears. If the console already starts booting into the system menu, it will freeze.
  • Wrong USB Port: You must use the front-facing USB ports. The rear ports generally will not work for the exploit, as stated on the official UDPIH GitHub.
  • Competing USB Devices: Any other USB devices (hard drives, external flash drives) connected to the console can cause the USB stack to hang. Unplug all other USB devices, recommends this Reddit post.
  • SD Card Issues:
    • The recovery_menu file must be on the root of the SD card.
    • The SD card must be formatted to FAT32.
    • SD cards with a capacity larger than 32GB may not work correctly, says this Reddit thread.
  • Bad NAND/eMMC: If the console has underlying NAND corruption or a dying eMMC, the recovery menu cannot load, often leading to a hard freeze instead of loading the menu.

I saw a suggestion to make sure you unplug power entirely to your console, then plug it back in right before your attempt, and try to get it going on a truly "cold" attempt, rather than a standby/restarted attempt.

Idk.

How do you do the PTB trick? What does it exactly do?

Thank you! I'll definitely look into this. Just ordered a 2-pack of Picos off of amazon.

Ok, so it didn’t work properly, but it did UNBRICK!! It didn’t get to minute menu, but instead the Wii U user select screen!
I guess UDPIH might have worked, just didn’t have a good sd card for it…
HOWEVER, I did run into a problem with some downloaded games from the old NNID user… (The store didn’t erase anything.)
After it turned on, I tested smash bros for Wii U, and it worked! Yesterday, I tested 3D world and it showed problem with system memory. I redownloaded the game through the OLD OWNERs account and it works.
(Game must have gotten corrupted or something!)
Now I’m deciding if it’s safe to download Aroma CFW! Should I after this? Don’t want another brick or problem, but I want to mod it lol 😭😂

I'd just recommend following https://wiiu.hacks.guide/ closely and setting up aroma and the basics. works great.

glad to hear your good news.

Remember: If udpih worked, it might mean you had a cbhc brick. So you need to make sure you know where youre starting in the hacking guide, if anything about cbhc still applies to you. I never had it so I can't give any advice on that.

Thanks!
Wait, how to check for CBHC? Im not sure if it has CFW still on it from the last owner, just want to check before I do anything cause I heard CBHC is super finicky with the Wii U!

the guide has a section for uninstalling cbhc as you're getting started. I just have no idea if you have it installed. you'll just have to figure that out somehow. It might be safe to follow the guide section to uninstall it even if you dont have it, but I have no idea. The only thing making me say you might have it, is you saying you think udpih worked.

a quick google search told me that you'd see ""Autobooting..." something when you start up if you have cbhc.
I have no idea if this is accurate.
