PlayStation Portal gets 1080p "High Quality" mode, offers higher bitrate for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming

The PlayStation Portal felt like a bit of a confused device when it launched. Supporting only Remote Play and requiring a PS5 console to be able to use it, it stood as a £200 accessory that appealed to a niche within a niche. Despite that though, it sold surprisingly well, with almost two million sales within its first year on the market. It took two years for Sony to address the elephant in the room and finally bring their Cloud Streaming to the platform, making it into something of a viable alternative to a PS5 console for some. And that experience is just getting better.

From today, PlayStation Portal owners can make use of a higher bitrate mode when streaming in 1080p. Dubbed "1080p High Quality", this mode is available for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, offering better image quality at the cost of higher data usage. Those interested for trying it for themselves can enable it by going to the Quick Menu, and browsing the Max Resolution options after updating their system.

The only issue with that is, even with this update it’s damn near unplayable with the random qualifying drops and hella input lag

I don’t even have a slow network either
My PS5 was in another state, and I was playing it, outside on the deck at my parents home! And all the games ran flawless, we were playing Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Forbidden West, as if it was right off the system.

With good internet it doesn't matter where you are, and my dad's router was way on the other side of his house in an office, nowhere near where we were sitting.

I have it. It is great. Cheap device. It gets the job done no gimmick here, You need a good wifi of course. I can teach you how to do that if you need. It's a great companion for a PS5 and an immense playstation library like we have.

and it's still a waste of money
I thought like that a while ago, but I my co-worker recommended, so I got one. And now I enjoy it very much. Sitting on the couch playing a quick game of COD or Fortnite. For me this works, I dont use it on vacation or whatever, but it can be convenient now and then :)

Do they ever make mention of the bitrate? Anything less than 50Mbps with HEVC looks ugly in motion on a screen this big.

It's for an extremely niche audience and that's why hardly anyone cares.
I feel like that's exactly what I've been saying? I can see the value in it for the right people. Or in other words, it's very niche, but I can see and respect that niche audience.

Funny I see news here about AI Copilot coming to Xbox, Xbox mode coming to Windows, Handheld Boost Mode for Switch 2, 1080p for PS Portal, and Nvidia DLSS 5 slop, but absolutely nothing on the widely heralded PSSR "2.0" for the PS5 Pro.

There’s no deep conspiracy there. I meant to write something up for it after reading into it more, but didn’t get around to doing that reading lol

Edit:
We also didn’t cover DLSS 5 did we?

Another underwhelming PlayStation product not sure I'll buy a PS6 when it's released, but for hacking it's always fun.

I don't feel there was any specific reason or conspiracy. Just found it a bit odd considering the amount of hype around it. DLSS 5 was in user submitted news. 🙂

Love my Pro. Zero regrets about my purchase whatsoever and there has been overwhelming praise about PSSR 2.0. PC master race people are mad that the PC they paid more for, is being outperformed by the Pro. lol. And no, I'm not referring to ACTUAL high end rigs. Just low to mid tier gaming PCs that people spent more on than the price of a Pro.

I couldn't care less (never had any Sony gaming device myself) but for PS-only guys like one of my friends this is great news I guess. I know that he enjoys his Portal as it's basically his Nintendo Switch replacement in a Sony world that he uses when being in a hotel or other places where he has Wifi but obviously won't bring his whole damn PS5 with him.

I read somewhere that someone claims is 30mbps, but it super super super clean, especially with high motion ( I tested Fortnite, COD, GT7, NFS, Rocket League and RIDE 6). It feels and looks great. Granted I am like 5 meters away from my Router and connected via 5Ghz, but still. You can see the difference with 1080p Max and normal.

That can't be right. 30mbps is only 3.75mb I used to have that speed years ago and everything was extremely slow.
