'Dragon Quest VII Reimagined' gets launch trailer

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a bold remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, launches today. For the occasion, Square Enix aired the launch trailer above.

In DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, set sail on the adventure of a lifetime as a bright-eyed young hero and his childhood friends are swept away from the peaceful island they call home. Sent back in time by an ancient tablet, they learn malevolent forces have sealed away entire lands. As they find more tablet fragments and open new routes to the past, what begins as a quest for answers becomes a fight for the fate of their world, bigger and more beautiful than they could have imagined.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined builds on the beloved original game to deliver a modern RPG for a new generation. Akira Toriyama’s classic character designs have been reimagined into a charming, hand-crafted 3D art style, complemented by diorama-inspired environments and dungeons. The story stays faithful to the original while offering a more streamlined experience and enhanced narrative depth through optional side quests, stories and minigames. The battle system is more thrilling and dynamic than ever, with dramatic changes, including “Moonlighting” – the ability to use two vocations at once – plus the adrenaline-fueled Vocational Perks and a new Monster Master vocation for summoning monsters.
Key features of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined include:
  • Hand-Crafted Aesthetic: The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series.
  • Enhanced Story: While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames.
  • Thrilling Battle System: The turn-based battle system has been overhauled with significant changes to offer more dynamic and thrilling battles, including an updated vocation system that features a Moonlighting mechanic, allowing players to use two vocations at once, a Vocational Perk ability that can be activated when a character gets worked up, and a new Monster Master vocation that introduces the “Positive Reinforcement” vocational perk that summons powerful monsters to assault any enemy.
  • Memorable Characters - Journey alongside characters like Kiefer, the prince of Estard, and Maribel, the daughter of a mayor, as well as many other allies and enemies.
  • Sprawling Exploration - Unlock, expand and explore different worlds by collecting fragments and completing tablets. The varied worlds feature bustling towns to visit, challenging dungeons to conquer, quests to undertake and so much more.
  • Quality-of-Life Improvements - A host of quality-of-life improvements have been implemented in the game for a smooth experience, including a redesigned UI.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is available now for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows at a suggested retail price of $59.99 USD.

"charming". If you say so. Kinda reminds me of the Link's Awakening remake, if less egregious, and that was... Grody.
I honestly like the graphical style of the game; my only problem is that Prince Kiefer looks like Matt Damon.

Coming from the 3ds version, I played the demo a bit on my Steam Deck OLED and was beyond amazed. Bought the game one day before it launched, and currently going through the prologue.
It's also crazily optimized, running at mostly stable 90fps with almost every setting maxed out(resolution scale is on Medium, it's oversampled on High).
Considering how much of a pain DQ7 was back then, I do appreciate all the changes in the remake to make it easier and shorter than it used to.

The maribel glitch messed up alot of people's saves

they don't feel confident about this game to the point they spoil the entire plot in the trailer huh?
that's honestly how square is sometimes, "the winne the pooh trailer" for KH3 was (I swear to god) 10 seconds of winnie the pooh and the rest of it was just balls out end game spoilers left and right

Sorry but I ain’t gonna spend another 300 hours into DQ7. Original run on PS-version on PSP in 2018 was enough. This game is Skyrim of 2000.

This version will take around 40-60 hrs for the main story. They cut out a lot of old mostly pointless contents from the PS1 version.

love it so far, the maps do have a "claymation" feel and the character models are ok. I own and remember the 3DS version, so far I am having a blast on this new one, and i have not had any sad feelings yet of anything missing.

the UI and menus are a HUGE improvement, and being able to know if you found all mini medals in the area you are currently in is a great addition to completionisttsstas

if you get the PS5 disk version, you can flip the disk box cover art around to the JNP cover art for your bookshelf or whatever.

This is actually because of a court case over a movie many years ago. I can't remember the movie or the actress, but someone saw a trailer with X actress in it and then went and saw the movie ... where she had been cut from the movie entirely. TLDR he won the case against the movie studio, and since then everyone tends to play it super super safe when it comes to trailers ... because they don't want to be sued.

This is the only DQ I won't pre-order and will buy on sale. Not because I don't live DQVII since it's one of my favourite games, but precisely because it's DQVII and they cut content that should not have been cut. Party chats are also not as interesting as they were in the 3DS version (which already cut a lot of content and I wasn't a fan of that, but at least it had more content than the original, here that isn't the case).

Edit: I won't even mention the changes in menus that removed the soul out of DQ.

most of the cut content can be done optionally when you have enough grey tablets the only thing that's really gone is the casino.

the lack of costumes is disappointing though
