'Dragon Quest VII Reimagined' gets launch trailer

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a bold remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, launches today. For the occasion, Square Enix aired the launch trailer above.

In DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined, set sail on the adventure of a lifetime as a bright-eyed young hero and his childhood friends are swept away from the peaceful island they call home. Sent back in time by an ancient tablet, they learn malevolent forces have sealed away entire lands. As they find more tablet fragments and open new routes to the past, what begins as a quest for answers becomes a fight for the fate of their world, bigger and more beautiful than they could have imagined.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined builds on the beloved original game to deliver a modern RPG for a new generation. Akira Toriyama’s classic character designs have been reimagined into a charming, hand-crafted 3D art style, complemented by diorama-inspired environments and dungeons. The story stays faithful to the original while offering a more streamlined experience and enhanced narrative depth through optional side quests, stories and minigames. The battle system is more thrilling and dynamic than ever, with dramatic changes, including “Moonlighting” – the ability to use two vocations at once – plus the adrenaline-fueled Vocational Perks and a new Monster Master vocation for summoning monsters.
Key features of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined include:
  • Hand-Crafted Aesthetic: The character designs, originally crafted by world-renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, have been reimagined into a charming 3D art style using dolls actually created in the real world. Environments and dungeons are also brought to life with a unique hand-crafted, diorama-style aesthetic that vividly illustrates the beloved world of the DRAGON QUEST series.
  • Enhanced Story: While remaining faithful to the original story, the narrative of DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined has been enhanced to provide a more streamlined story experience. Alongside the main adventure, players can enjoy optional side quests, stories and minigames.
  • Thrilling Battle System: The turn-based battle system has been overhauled with significant changes to offer more dynamic and thrilling battles, including an updated vocation system that features a Moonlighting mechanic, allowing players to use two vocations at once, a Vocational Perk ability that can be activated when a character gets worked up, and a new Monster Master vocation that introduces the “Positive Reinforcement” vocational perk that summons powerful monsters to assault any enemy.
  • Memorable Characters - Journey alongside characters like Kiefer, the prince of Estard, and Maribel, the daughter of a mayor, as well as many other allies and enemies.
  • Sprawling Exploration - Unlock, expand and explore different worlds by collecting fragments and completing tablets. The varied worlds feature bustling towns to visit, challenging dungeons to conquer, quests to undertake and so much more.
  • Quality-of-Life Improvements - A host of quality-of-life improvements have been implemented in the game for a smooth experience, including a redesigned UI.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is available now for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on Windows at a suggested retail price of $59.99 USD.

"charming". If you say so. Kinda reminds me of the Link's Awakening remake, if less egregious, and that was... Grody.

You may be the only person to ever think this. I’m hoping ALttP gets remade in this style. It’s cute and charming indeed.

Dude it's totally fine if you like it I'm not even trying to argue with you about that, but to say they're the only person? That's just not true. I don't like it either, making at least one other person. Just say you love it but you can't speak for the entire world.

Thank you for the internet social skills lecture.

The game is charming and really fun.

I'm about 15 hours in it and they cut a whole bunch of fat from the PS1 version. Which is a good thing, it doesn't feel as bloat as the old one. My last JRPG (come at me nerds) was Expedition 33 and as great and awesome as the game is, both endings depressed the hell out of me. I haven't even touch the free DLC yet.

DQ7 is an opposite of that game and like most of the DQ games, it's like a comfort food after a long day at work. There are also a lot of mods out for the PC version already too.

Well you need some better social skills when you don't understand that just because you have a strong opinion about something, doesn't mean the entire world agrees with you. That's narcissist behavior.

I've been playing it for a couple of days after completing the demo and i have to say that it's not a bad game, the main character reminds a lot of another character from Tobal N.2 (the one dressed in green with the cap)whose name I don't remember now.

Apparently this version is missing several chapters of the original story, I know it's "reimagined", and not just a direct remake, but I feel like it's going to be missing a lot. I'll probably stick to the 3DS version. Problem is, I am a min-maxer, so I have to have all of my party members with all jobs mastered when I beat the game. The Switch version is likely to be better in that regard. I'd still have preferred a full remake with all content included, and maybe a new bonus dungeon.

Nope, he is not the only one. I found Links' Awakening boring and the graphical style unpleasant. I played the original one on the gameboy (pocket), that was great. Nintendo makes boring remakes with no heart or quality of life improvements. At full price.

I really liked the 3DS version and gotta admit, this looks really great. No way I'm buying this for 60 bucks but if it gets below 20 in a sale, I'm all in.

Also for f*cks sake: PLEASE do DQM1 next, Square Enix!

A British dub? That sounds goofy.

Looks very nice, though.
Not just British, but a whole bunch of European accents as well. Funny enough, my partner who's from Manchester said people from one of the island are straight up having Yorkshire accent and the town name is a nod to a TV show Emerdale (I think).

That's pretty funny thanks for that.
