I want to make a Minecraft Java server, with Paper MC for plugins. I successfully did that, it stats up and people on the network can connect. however, I tried port forwarding (GL.inet Travel Router) and when others outside of my network attempt to connect, they are given the error: "Connection timed out, getsockopt".

I allowed it through firewall, but maybe I'm doing something wrong. If you can help me that would be appreciated, I also need clarification on the whole port forwarding thing, as I don't know a lot about how to set it up with IP and ports, etc. Thank you

Hey! If you are getting the "Connection timed out, getsockopt" error with a GL.inet travel router, it is usually because of a Double NAT issue (since your travel router is connected behind your main ISP router).

Here is how you can fix it step-by-step:

  1. Set a Static Local IP: Make sure your server computer has a fixed local IP address.
  2. Main ISP Router: Log into your main internet router and forward port 25565 (TCP & UDP) to your GL.inet travel router's local WAN IP address.
  3. GL.inet Travel Router: Log into your travel router panel (usually 192.168.8.1), go to Port Forwarding, and forward port 25565 directly to your server PC's local IP address.
  4. Firewall: Double-check that Java (javaw.exe) is allowed through both Private and Public networks in Windows Firewall.
Once port forwarding is set up on both routers, external players should be able to join using your public IP!
