Yikes there are a lot of contenders for this. A favorite of mine happens to be the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchise.

I guess Silent Hill 2 in particular has quite a bit to dissect.

James Sunderland is a fairly sympathetic character. Though he loses his temper at some characters, he's generally a person motivated to see his deceased (?) wife again. When it is revealed that James was the reason she passed, the player is forced to evaluate the character they've been rooting for. After all, the player bonds with the character being controlled, and the player is motivated by the same goals. So, this reveal causes reflection.

Thinking about it, I'm not sure the other Team Silent games are as main character-centric as Silent Hill 2. From what I remember, the characters in SH1, 3 and 4 are in their respective situations because of the choices made by others. Silent Hill 2 is unique because James seeks out Silent Hill, not knowing how it will manifest his own issues and past.

Yes SH 2 is very story driven but my favorite silent hill games are SH1, SH3, and SH Downpour. I would say downpours story is pretty deep for a simple story line reminds me I have to do a run of downpour for my youtube channel via ps3 emulator.

Both if you want. I would start with the remake though since it captured atmosphere and story of SH2 just right.

Oooh, I vote for the PS2 original. I should tell you that I haven't played the remake, so I'm not the best person to ask.

I played through the PS2 version many times back in the day, so I have a lot of nostalgia tied to it.

I heard the SH2 movie Return To SIlent Hill wasn't that good from ratings and reviews. I'll wait to see it to see how it is. One review said its the same quality as the original Silent Hill movie.

Funny thing, I have the DVD of the first movie, but I've never sat down to watch it. I'm curious about the SH2 adaptation too, since I'm a big fan of the PS2 game. I'd expect a Hollywood spin, but otherwise, it should be interesting to experience.

That reminds me, I meant to reply to your post above: I should try Downpour. Some fans say it's the strongest of the non-Team Silent games. Unfortunately, it's not cheap on the PS3 or 360, and I don't expect Konami to release it on Steam anytime soon.

Yes, Silent Hill Downpour was a great game. Its not as good as the original 1-3 games but its still a fun game. I own a copy of the game for the xbox 360 but will be doing a run for it on my youtube channel at some point. Maybe for the next halloween horror game marathon I do every sept-oct. I will do some silent hill games.
